There’s no money in education for it. We don’t have the deep pockets of professional sports. No we are not expendable so stop that self pity stuff. My wife and oldest two sons have worked through the pandemic. My oldest son is a warranty administrator for a Kenworth truck dealership so he deals with truckers everyday. My middle son works in the restaurant industry and my wife at a bakery all three have worked through out the pandemic all have interacted with the public. Wear a mask take precautions (wash hands use sanitizer) don’t let the media scare you.
It is hard not to feel expendable at times with all that’s going on in schools. A warranty administrator, someone in the restaurant industry and a bakery worker - do they spend hours in close proximity with people without masks? When they’re signing contracts or customer is counting out money, do they provide hand over hand assistance? How about people spitting and screaming in their face? I’m assuming they didn’t toilet or feed any of their customers. There is no possible social distancing in some classrooms and often the children in those classes are back full time. Several of my students can’t/won’t wear masks for behavioral or medical reasons. Many of our activities require hand over hand assistance. When a kid is in a behavior crisis and in danger of hurting himself, you can’t walk away when they spit or scream in your face. We should be tested. I wear kn95 masks. I wear gloves when needed. I wash my hands religiously. But we should be tested and, in a public school, they can’t just test special ed teachers; everyone would need to be tested so no one is.
Yes, welcome to the wonderful world of education. Grab your goodie bag of 2 boxes of Kleenex & 1 bottle of hand sanitizer and your free coupon for a jean day because we appreciate you. Now go sit over there and work until we say stop.
I refuse to be randomly tested.
Protect yourself you have that right and we the right to choose testing or vaccinations. If you are masked up and vaccinated then why do you care who isn’t if it’s so effective???
It’s hard to avoid thinking you’ve answered your own question, but neither we nor our Georgia colleagues’ family members are expendable. No one is, of course.
I saw Dr. Fauci several weeks ago explaining the way he understood the rollout of protection would be going, and aside from medical emergency and first responders, teachers were on the list. He was referring both to a vaccine, whenever it may be available, but also to testing kits end cleaning supplies and things like that.
Fauci seem to be under the impression that millions of these things had been ordered and were being organized to be distributed as he spoke. He specifically referred to rapid testing devices being sent to schools across the country.
President Trump has spoken about having the military on standby to distribute the vaccine, but I don’t know if that would apply to these kind of things also.
What I don’t understand is if they are raring to go, why haven’t they done so yet?
It’s possible I misunderstood, or Dr. Fauci spoke too soon, or that the president was referring to a beautiful vision he had, one not yet realized.
The general consensus at the moment seems to be we are as safe as our communities are.
This gives me no comfort, though, as without a vaccine no one is safe, and no one that we know of is immune.
It certainly seems to emphasize that we are more valuable as a cog in the great American business machine then as important contributors to society, or even individual citizens.

Cheap babysitters!
You will never be safe. That was never a promise of this life.
That does not mean go rushing into the fray unless it is your choice to do so. For example, my nephews are firefighters. They knew they were signing up by choosing a dangerous career. I signed up to teach. I did not sign up to be a sacrifice for a virus or school shooter. Now, given my personality, there is a good chance that I would be one of the ones charging in. I’m personally not freaking out over my F-2-F situation. However, I find it kind of rude to assume we should just merrily accept whatever those who do not put the time and effort into knowing what our job entails tell us to do. They can kiss my big, old, buttocks!
I do not want to be unnecessarily tested!!
Most of our campus cases have been teachers. We would love to be tested.
Just found out that the Feds and the State are kicking in money and rapid test kits for our district. Great. Except that the district announced that most of the rapid testing will be used for athletics. Gotta keep playing sports. Anything for teachers- crickets.
Go to your health department website. You can get free tests. I've gotten 3 covid tests at CVS and never charged once.
Our union just negotiated testing every 2 months. There is strength in unity!
Yes, there is. However, TX is a Right-to-work state. Meaning the Unions are basically powerless. We can't strike and can lose our licenses and our retirement if we strike. If we can flip the state Blue, we can undo the damage.
It’s the weirdest thing ever. I thought I was the only one that was asking that. Why isn’t anyone getting tested. A covid stew in the making.
We are expendable
My district just announced free covid testing for employees and students. Of course, the day I got tested & tested positive. 🥴
Where do you think you contacted it? Are you ftf?
Yes, that is the message that seems to be sent, whether intentionally or not. The good news is if your community is taking this seriously and cases are smaller, you should be safe. Of course, where I am this is not the case. We are increasing daily (except on days they don’t run the tests).
Yes
Unions
My union would be happy to see regular testing. What we get is flyers advertising the existence of testing during the school day a couple of towns over.
I arranged my own antibody and covid tested in August (both negative). I also have been arranging regular tests about every 6 weeks. So many people are asymptomatic, and I couldn't live with myself if I got one of the littles or their family seriously ill.
Their is not enough money in education to do so. You wear a mask! Wash your hands! Keep distance! Pray...Stock up on hand sanitizers & Kleenex! While teaching keep your distance, remember why you choose your career and teach.
There should be no cost for covid testing. In most cases, there's no cost to the patient being treated for covid. Your local Health Department website should have a list of places you can go. For the specifics of what is covered by the CARES Act, you can Google "CARES Act provider relief fund: for patients."
Because Donald Trump did not push for testing and contact tracing. People in my school voted against it when we were given that option from the local health department. Personally, I don’t see harm in getting tested weekly yourself. Just do it after work as asymptotic for self reassurance.
Yes- you can go on your own and get tested whenever you want.
Why don’t we? That’s an easy one:
1. Donald Trump
2. Dr. Redfield CDC
3. Republicans
4. Capitalism
5. Donald Trump
Hmmm Last I heard we had a democracy not tyranny. Fauci isn’t blameless
Apparently, yes.
Yes. Actions of some would suggest that teachers are expendable. People will lie to keep schools open and kids in classrooms.
