This past school year highlighted to me how undervalued our profession is. I get so much joy out of teaching and it is my passion, but had a few moments this last year that I seriously considering working in the private sector 😔

Hello?? Knock, knock!!! We became teachers because we believe in humanity. We became people to be shields to little ones and profess to them to push on no matter what. You can't give up. Do you know how many lives you have brilliantly have been an exemplar to?? Covid is not anyone's fault, but especially yours. Keep on stepping. Life continues. 💕❤❤❤

Let’s be objective here- does anyone have the actual data as to the decline in enrollment in teacher prep programs at universities? How about the data for teachers who leave the profession? People enter the profession with the best of intentions, but what she’s describing in her article is spot on. My kids are grown now, but I will always regret coming home from a day in the classroom with nothing left in the tank for them. I was just exhausted and mentally fried from the day. They deserved better. What price does your personal life need to pay in order for one to be a teacher? I’m happy for her and that she was able to make the changes needed in her life.

This is one of the reasons I identify with the Jason Bourne character. The statement "look at what they make you give." This quote truly applies to the teaching profession.

I can relate. Seriously considered leaving the profession this year. Still might after this school year. Teaching has changed in the 20 years I've been teaching and not for the better

like

It's changed drastically in the 38 years since I started! But the change in the parenting (or lack thereof) in the past 20 years has changed the children.

We need to stop, and stop allowing others to continue, blaming covid for why teaching has become a horrifying profession to be a part of. It only added some Yuck to what was already a festering sore: we aren’t free to work hard and make decisions in our own rooms. We are always on guard for what garbage is going to be heaped on us, combined with being required to carry all the kids on our backs, when they should be putting in work. They fail, we are required to make that F “just as much ours as theirs” which is a bullshit statement. Then get scorned for “not caring enough,” as if I didn’t, and if that would have changed their incorrect answers. We can’t win, and this job is not worth the damage it causes, until we get the professional immunity, which used to be there (but only as part of a social contract) back in writing.

Over the past decade, there has been a 33% decline in teacher prep enrollment compared to a 4% decline in post-secondary enrollment overall. I think you’re absolutely correct to say this is a festering sore and can’t be blamed on CoVid. The roots go back further than that. I will posit that the sudden shift to virtual (not experienced by all but certainly experienced by many) made a bad situation worse. It was unexpected, new to many of us, and required the production of new materials at a time when we were already reeling. But while the problem may have been exacerbated by CoVid, it was not caused by CoVid. We need to focus elsewhere.

A scary 😧 observation was how many former educators, now administrators lost sight of the needs of teachers as they transitioned into a virtual world ... And now how those same educators are allowing the bean counters to dictate the return to “normal!” The national union is useless in the trenches, it is local chapters who are fighting the good fight with districts and Boards for our students and ourselves.

likehelpful

The fact that anyone thinks its going to return to the former "normal" in my opinion, is wishful thinking. I'm going to continue to socially distance because my health depends upon it. Other people might continue socially distancing because people in this pandemic have been acting absolutely kray kray.

She hit the nail on the head when she said that parents have changed. Ohmygoodness, yes!

like

In addition, It appears that parent(s) lives and work requirements have changed over the years- as ours have/ARE now: New demands for all. Economist say that we barely recovered from the 2008 economic downturn when CoVid19 appeared among us -globally.

Yes! And I wish that the changes had been for what is needed, Computer Science “requirements “, official “OnlineLearning” with PD, rather than RemoteTeaching or Crisis Education.
