No no no. A thousand times no. If you want to help volunteer during elections. Staff call centers, donate blood. Get the hell out of your agency office and really make change. The last thing that’s going to help us now is a bunch of planners and creatives in a room trying to be “award winning.” Nothing but respect for all the good ad work that’s been done but this is a serious issue that requires serious action
I second @SAD1 if you want to be opportunistic and make something for award shows, lord knows you won’t be the only one.
If you actually want to make a difference then go do something real about it.
But no one really answered
Yeah, why aren't we making an ad about it?
Honestly, what would you do? Make an anti school shooting campaign? Sounds like I’m being an asshole I know but genuinely curious about what our industry’s “voice” would be saying
Did you post something related earlier?
So what’s your idea?
Because advertising doesn’t actually care about anything other than money
As long as you're not just doing it to win an award, go for it
No one said anything about submitting to award shows, OP is asking why we aren't giving a voice to the change, as people with power to do so
And to answer from my agency it's because they don't do anything unless they get paid and they are too scared to take a stand on anything that matters unless it directly affects our CEO. I'd be down to do anything that amplified the voices of these kids who've already organized a march and done so much. They could use our resources
Retweet everything they say, write your own tweets, get on your representatives feed, get on all politicians feeds, form a "responsible R association" so that people who like the benefits of their current membership will have an alternative. Start a dialog about the great qualities of our democracy, about hypocrisy vs honesty, about the first amendment. March with the kids, create pithy banners and chants for their march.
We can and should do things as individuals (volunteer and vote) and as an industry.
If that ‘doing something’ happens to be a PSA, video, etc. that makes a difference, great. We can take agencies out of the equation altogether, they are a name and building.
The people are the ones who make things and if we want to work on something collectively it shouldn’t matter which agency and if that agency is getting paid. And just because we make something doesn’t mean we have to submit it for an award (I know, heresy, but for once this is actually a chance to save lives, instead of puffing ourselves up to think that what we do is actually that important.)
