Why aren't there enough good teachers? I'm finding it so difficult to recruit strong talent.

I don't think people that go into teaching realize how physically and emotionally taxing it is.

I think there are plenty of good teachers ... however, it takes time to be a good teacher and the evaluation systems that states are putting in place make you feel like you need to be exceptional in your first day—it takes time, practice, reflection, support and patience to be great!!!

I have been substitute teaching and still waiting to hear news on my applications as we speak. I have great letters of recommendation from 2 principals and other teachers with whom I’ve worked. If administrators check references on strong and dependable applicants who’ve received positive feedback, they should have quality teachers in their buildings.

Because the pay sucks relative to what you can get in the Corporate world!!! Strong talent is at a Premium right now in all the Hot Markets that demand it!! ..............It’s a worker’s market right now, Not an Employer’s!!!

Why would anyone agree to working for $30 or $40 K/ year when they could start at $70 - $80K/ year with great potential for advancement, and NOT have to contribute part of their income to work supplies??

There’ll be a down turn soon enough and Top people will settle for teaching jobs again, until the market goes back up. It’s all cyclical.

The war on teachers over the past 15 years has taken a tremendous toll!!! It’s been a success to certain degree because No one wants to go into teaching nowadays, the pay is shit, the reward is small, and who the Hell wants to come out of college having to work as many, or more jobs than they did when they were In College!!?? ...............The whole point of going to College is to get a decent job where you can advance in your career, and do better than your parents!!! Not still have to live with them after, in order to make ends meet. ...............or not even make ends meet but keep your head above water!!

I think there are! It’s the support and compensation that is lacking.

like

There aren't enough students going into teaching because the salary and benefits are not competitive with other jobs that require a similar education level. There will need to be some changes made (incentives added like more pay, better raises, etc.) before enough good students begin choosing schools of education again. my wife and I both work in buildings where the majority of the staff will be retiring in the next 5-15 years. Who's going to replace us?

The input is not greater than the output!

We must go to college for at least a bachelor's, some even require masters, pass testing for certifications that cost a lot, take a job starting at 20-40k a year, have no health insurance or at most medical, have limited options for retirement, deal with the actual classroom of students and their parents, create admin/district approved lesson plans, go to every meeting for every IEP or troublesome students and work through a plan, pay for items out of pocket with no or limited reimbursement, make our rooms creative, Do mandatory yearly PD, take workloads home because we can't finish it all at work.

Outputs of the job: we get holidays and summer off?
...but we're still required to attend meetings during those times and revamp our classrooms throughout the summer...

hmmm...I wonder why it's hard to find "good talent?"

likesmart

I don't know about anyone else, but I teach in academies and lesson plan over the summer, so I barely get 2 weeks off each summer.

What defines “strong talent?” I’ve noticed that some principals want teachers who smile and nod along to the admin and don’t come up with any crazy new ideas, while other principals expect every teacher to develop out of this world, innovative ideas all the time. You’re too much, or you’re not enough. What gives?! Teachers can’t win!

Many people capable of performing this very difficult job rightly believe they deserve to be compensated more. Many people want the ability to take time off whenever they want/need it rather than just having summers “off."

“Can we make the drizzle a little more luscious?”

My issue is less with the fact that the word “luscious” is pretty binary. The drizzle is either luscious or it isn’t. My issue is the “a little more” part. So, it’s luscious right now. We want it MORE luscious—but definitely not a lot more, just a little. Otherwise it would be TOO luscious. Can’t have that.

Has anyone recently made the switch to in house and now feel unorganized and less productive than when billing hours? For what it is worth, I’ve received good reviews and my superiors seems to be pleased with my work. Last Spring I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. When I was diagnosed, I think I had had it for several years. My doctor put me on a diabetes med (my A1C was 10.2 and my blood sugar was 270). I knew I didn’t want to deal with the adverse effects of this disease, so I made some drastic dietary changes, started exercising, and brought my blood sugar down. I am now back in the pre-diabetic range, and I got off my diabetes meds. I lost 40 lbs. and feel great! Take care of yourselves! It’s important
