Why can’t we have a Wuhan-style lockdown for 3 weeks and have the military/national guard deliver food/essentials and only let out people for medical care? Better than a prolonged semi-lockdown imo.

Hahaha have you see the size of Wuhan compared to the United States? Where do you get enough National Guard to do this? How do you determine who gets how much food? We don’t even have the resources to get nurses the right PPE. Do people not understand how small our Armed Forces is in comparison to the National population?

Why does everyone here just see this as Tyranny vs Freedom? Why can’t we see it as emergency-enforced cooperation for a moment in time and then a reversion back once this is all over? Or are we alluding to a snowball effect? I’m honestly confused. Italy and South Korea, India are all democracies that accomplished this, why can’t we? I don’t believe the constitution says: “in times of a pandemic, y’all gotta follow the constitution to the T”

like

Idk, Patriot Act, TSA, NSA spying. Time and again the US government has proved untrustworthy, so why should anyone trust they’d let go after the emergency is over?

The willingness of people to surrender their constitutional rights due the virus is really concerning.

Not saying it’s ideal, but this would mitigate the economic and health impact. Also emergency powers give some leeway with this.

like

Certain states / people would start shooting at National Guard before they accepted a forced lock down. Not saying that’s right... but I can’t imagine it would go well for anyone

Because of the Constitution. Why on Earth would anyone actually want this?

Also, what do you think would happen as soon as you opened up the National borders?

Freedom..duh!

The only country in the world.

@EY1- seems like that only happens in USA😂

Freedom and people’s right. Simple answer to why we haven’t done it yet. I have no problem with staying home for three weeks without going outside but there are good amount of people that can’t stay on doors for even one day without going out. Not talking about the “essential” workers.

From a logistics standpoint, I think we have too few people and too much area to cover. We would need to set up distribution nodes all over the country, which might be okay in urban areas but rural people would be SOL. If it were only a couple states that needed to be locked down completely, we could probably do that, but this thing is everywhere.

It wasn’t 3 weeks in Wuhan, it was months.

Despite laws restricting the use of the military on US soil, implementation would be much easier said than done. For starters, we don’t have enough manpower to do so.

I doubt it. The cost of training a million plus (I know the number of recently unemployed individuals far exceeds that amount) people to enforce a military-style lockdown would probably exceed the benefits. Never mind the fact that the individuals enforcing said lockdown are also at risk of transmitting/contracting COVID.

Did you watch Contagion? When the vaccine was out, you got a bracelet with a QR Code to show you were immune. Maybe we’ll have something like that here.

In China, you had an officer at every street to check your QR Code and you could only enter if you lived there AND had not tested positive for Coronavirus. Democracy will not allow that to happen in the Western world.

The CCP is blatantly lying about the number of cases and deaths, it was FAR higher than what has been reported.

It also just delays the inevitable. You might be thinking it would eradicate the virus, but it won’t. As soon as the 3 week lockdown was lifted, cases would begin again and without mitigation we’d be back to square one very quickly.

Herd immunity or a vaccine are the only (somewhat) permanent ends to this. Effective treatments that are widely available is another potential path if it reduces the mortality rate to a more acceptable level.

The lockdown is buying us time and keeping the medical system from being overwhelmed, but without a vaccine there is no plan to prevent the estimated 60% infection rate, and a vaccine is really not likely within a short enough timeframe to matter.

I would also be against a forced solution especially using the military, but as we’ve seen, people by and large are complying with voluntary lockdown—so far anyway.

I would think in terms of deaths per capita in addition to deaths per cases. Even if it’s similar to flu mortality, it’s a bigger problem if the infection rates are dramatically higher than flu.

With 330 million people in the US, if 60% were infected, a 0.1-0.4% mortality rate would translate to 200k-800k COVID-19 deaths.

But are the calls for defunding absurd? Are we overreacting? Or is this level of scrutiny justified?
