Why do accounting firms use a pip vs just firing people? I saw so many people get terminated in 2020 who had no pip or warning. Why give a pip to one and fire another? Is it possible to get off of a pip and is it a mark on you for the rest of your career? I heard it’s a way for the firm to cover their ass. But don’t get why people got let go of without pips?

A PIP, when used CORRECTLY, is a good tool to train and retain an employee that is average+, but lacking is a single area/skill.

We had a staff who with excellent soft skills, average technical skills, but a critical issue was status updates on the work they were doing. They would get behind because they were taking on too much work and their deliverables were constantly late and PMs never knew when things were actually ready for the next step. There was formal and informal feedback given about this for several months, and it would improve for a week or two then go back to being bad.

The PIP laid out clear expectations to measure against (e.g. semi-weekly huddle with each PM that had any outstanding work, a WP tacker with status and deadline). The staff then worked hard at the PIP and is doing excellent now and a top performer several years later.

Again, when used CORRECTLY, a PIP that is resolved is not a black mark and (at least in the example above) actually might put someone in a better career path.

Some people have no future and no hope of getting better. I’ve seen people come off of PIP and perform. I’ve also seen much nicer people just not understand the work we do, hence why they were let go.

At my firm a lot of the people who got let go had no warnings or indications of performance issues and got let go without a PIP. I think for Covid layoffs they skip the PIP for the sake of time and because some of the people getting cut are meeting expectations.

Many people leave when put on a PIP so in normal circumstances it is better for the firm as they don’t have to actually fire you.

How is it better for the firm? How does it affect them to fire or not fire

What is the correct course of action when you find out (secondhand from their spouse) that co-counsel has dementia but refuses to discuss it or withdraw from your case, and is not returning calls? Can't tell client because no proof therefore could be disparaging co-counsel.

I’ve recently joined with 12.75 Base and I only get 85k per month in hand. I’m thinking of switching exactly after one year. I don’t have any prior work experience so my total yoe at the time of switch would be just 1 year. With no internship too. But I want to go for it as I know my colleagues from my colleges who have got better opportunities than me and are earning more than me with same experience. I want the best hike possible what is the maximum I can expect ? (Percentage wise)
