No one wants to live in the backward south. California forever goodbye

"More than 360,000 people left California in 2021, in what some are calling 'The California Exodus' — many leaving for states like Texas, Arizona and Washington.
And a rising number of former Californians are migrating out of the country altogether and are instead heading south of the border. Many are seeking a more relaxed and affordable lifestyle in Mexico."

I grew up in 2 out of 3 metros you mentioned, currently live in Chicago, and am contemplating a move to LA.
1. Cali has great weather.
2. Cali has more amenities/ things to do
3. Compared to southern cities, Cali’s terrain is unmatched
4. Cali has more diverse culture
5. Just because a city is vibrant doesn’t mean that it is as vibrant as cities in Cali. Everything is relative.
The whole point of making money is to do the things you want to do. You won’t go hungry or homeless on $250K in Cali.
Yes please. No one from California calls it "Cali." (Incidentally, I stay here because my husband and I were born and raised here and our families are here.)
Ain’t nobody comparing Los Angeles to Atlanta Charlotte or Dallas 😂😂😂
Yeah wtf MTE
The happiness and mental health I gain from living in CA has [so far] exceeded anything another city/state can provide
The constant “indoor weather outside” as I like to call it and beautiful views do WONDERS for you mental health

As a woman with a daughter there is no way I’d move to a red state now no matter how much it might benefit me financially.
Oh I hate Seattle because of the weather and the city is not as diverse but if you gave me the option of that vs. anywhere in the midwest/south, I’d pick Seattle
I moved from CA to TX and I’d give more than $1800/month to go back. I think we have different perceptions of vibrancy, or how much we value it.
I think I was specifically pointing to 3 metros - Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte. Austin is understood to not be in the same league
I can’t speak for the people who move here, but the people who grew up here, especially those of us from major cities—it’s a significant amount of culture shock involved with moving to another city/state. There’s a lot about California that’s just “different” from the rest of the country, and for some of us, it doesn’t matter how much that comfort may cost us every month.
I can understand that. If you're used to a certain way of life and have a network/memories then it may be a challenge moving elsewhere.
In the Bible Belt right now, and let me tell you: I’d gladly pay CA taxes and live in a region with like-minded people. Always thought I’m open-minded and medium-conservative, but boy, I can’t handle that level of conservatism hitting me in the face every single day during my day to day activities. Plus, any aspect of world-culture is totally absent. Really nice restaurants: Absent. Good sushi: Absent. School systems and most health care systems are disappointing. World class museums or shows? Not here. I’d happily pay 1800’bucks a month and get access to all of the above.
Lol okay. What state has better people then if in your opinion Californians suck?
I live in all those cities and east coast. I would always pick CA over them and did. The 1800 does not take in the account of daily living cost especially groceries. A mango cost 50 cents here. East coast it’s 2.50.

Cali is a city in Colombia.
Again, you must be a transplant.
Diversity and politics.

The Republicans/Trump supporters in LA/SoCal are at least socially tolerant/accepting in majority of the cases. Miles ahead of those in the South. There is no comparison here

Agreed with all of the above. My decision to move here wasn’t purely financial. I value other benefits more. If you (or anyone) value the money savings more then for sure move somewhere else. It’s not a new concept that people want different things out of life and where they live
Some of us were born and raised here in LA proper, simple as that, this is HOME. Most people don't move from the city/country they were born in unless they feel they need/have to. I would and have lived abroad before I ever move to another state. Many of they things such as great weather, culture, and opportunity aren't found in too many other places in this country. I went to college in SF and came back to LA for the weather and family. There's a reason why so many people from other countries choose places like LA and NYC to live in. I driven cross country several times and have seen what is in between beautiful nice to explore but not enough to keep me there.
Same here. Grew up in LA. Went to the Bay Area for school. Came back here. Not leaving. No other place like it in the world.
I moved from LA to Austin - and used the leftover funds from the sale of my condo to buy a *second* house in FL
You must like choices. Oh, wait. Never mind.
Take a good look at the indirect taxes as I know a few people who moved Cali to Texas and they say it’s not really thy different when you compare it all.
Ha a mortgage payment, not really in Cali or most Texas metro’s. Texas property tax much higher and reassessed each year, lots of other payments hence the indirect comment - do whatever you want but I’d say Cali is the beats bet.

Not exactly the South, but close-ish:
moved here from DC/Northern VA - a highly educated, world class region full of smart, educated people, etc etc. since I lived in NoVa, my taxes literally doubled after moving to LA.
No problem.
Couldn’t pay me enough to drop the lifestyle here and move back to the DC area. Nothing comes in close comparison to the food, scenery, weather, cultural diversity, entertainment options, outdoors stuff to do all year round.
And yes there are plenty of highly educated, qualified, successful people here working in the corporate sector and just about any other professional industry. Not all of LA is TikTok, Instagram and Hollywood - only a fraction of it tbh

As for the South - God forbid, never

Lol same
Agree with pwc1. Everywhere is expensive these days even my rural ass home town in NY. You might as well pay all that money AND live somewhere nice.
As a Queens native that loves staying around Manhattan and BK… besides preferring palm trees to a White Christmas, I get way more space for the cash in California too. I can’t give up both. LA’s the perfect HCOL city for me
Why do people keep asking this question? IYKYK.
Can’t leave family. I’m within an hour of parents and in-laws
