Because you don't work for a company. You are a free lancer supporting a number of small businesses (partners) that are on a sales platform (consulting firm).
Because I’d rather choose what I get staffed to then someone choosing it for me. Double edged sword.
You'll learn that consulting firms over complicate everything. It has a purpose but still it's annoying, you need to play the game unfortunately.
When I try to explain this to anyone outside of consulting..... 🤦🏻♀️
I don’t want to staff someone who is not a good fit for the project/client since they are all different.
What level are you Op?
Yep it’s stupid
Maybe consulting is not for you......
You network so you can find people you actually like working with, or at least who can become reliable sources of support for you. You interview so you don't join a project where it would be a bad fit for the role and bad for all involved.
The hustle can feel strange, but it benefits you to put in the effort
You got a job but now you have a find work within that job by interviewing with and searching for people with open jobs. Welcome to consulting
Think about it this way: you own a business. You need someone you can rely on to work for you. You know someone who fits the description and you trust them. Why would you go out looking for someone else when you have someone in house you can take on? Simple
*long story short, you want to be that someone that people call on. That’s why we network. You won’t get that Coca Cola or AT&T gig on merits alone unless you’re a specialist and only you can do the job. Almost everyone is smart here. Gotta stand out some other way
Hate to disappoint you, but it’s not all that different in industry, either.
Coworkers. Can’t live with ‘em, can’t find work without ‘em.
If you have a Jesus take the wheel approach to staffing, you’re gonna have the same results for your career. People take care of people they know
Wouldn’t you want to get to the people you’ll be working with before you staff them on a project you’ll be working on for months with long hours, dinners, and traveling?
Because you don't have reputation and established credibility
Despite the annoyance, it's all great learning. It will give you all the skills you need in ways you can't possibly appreciate now. Do yourself a favor and drink the kool aid. The sooner, the better. This from someone who swore never to drink it after 10 years in industry.
