Why do MBA hires make so much for only 2 additional years of courses? Even when looking at the classes, it doesn't seem like anything crazy you couldnt learn from some other avenue?

I hear that quite a bit, but what is it about the nwtowrk that commands such weight? Is it the proffessors you work with, classmates, alumni base?

They(those at top 15) spend 5-7 years of savings in those 2 years. Don’t forget that.

This is why i am asking, trying to decide if it is worth the cost

I probably come with an unpopular view of an MBA. To me, so many of us worked super hard in undergrad. We graduated top of class and competed for the best jobs. We got one of them! All of the second tier students went on to get their MBA, and then they get to enter the workforce, making more. For what? Being a worse student? Not applying themselves the first time around? I know that isn’t everyone’s story, but I feel bitter towards those who fit the description above. My sister got her MBA at Yale and the students were so disengaged that MY MOTHER did their group corporate accounting project. Like.. you guys are 100k in debt, you got into YALE, and you don’t care enough to do the work? I love school and I want to go back, but I’m scared of the cost. Scared it won’t benefit me. Also, I love everything about my current job except the salary (which isn’t horrible). Oy vey.

KPMG1 appreciate the openness to have a convo. I agree that there are questionable folks from top MBA who earn so much but the majority I think are hard workers. If I were to give my 0.02, I would say life is about uncertainties. You gotta make you your mind about wanting the MBA or not, then make the best out of it. If you’re gonna sit and wonder what “may” happen, you’d just be spending time with hesitations and nothing else done. For me, it’s worth it, not for monetary value but for the experience

like

Be top of your undergrad class, get top 1 percent of jobs, beat 95 percent of others on gmat trying to get into bschool. Get into top program where learning is in small groups, so you learn from each other’s diverse experience. Make everyone compete by bell curve, among group of hyper competitives, so folks work Very hard. Its difficult to recreate that experience by other avenues. My classmates who were less successful are partners at McKinsey, my classmates who are more successful are doing really cool things now.

This is the answer i was looking for. All of that makes sense, thank you

You *can* obviously learn anything online now. How would you prove you actually do know these things in an interview setting though? You writing on your resume “sufficient financial knowledge on capital allocation methods through google” doesn’t necessarily set well. With an MBA, an employer knows you have at least has the courses and reviewed materials rather than your word saying you know some information

like

Think about an additional filter / job screening. It signals that the candidates are pretty good, especially those in higher ranked programs with years of experience and track record of academic excellence

like

OP, you can say the same thing about undergrad. Most undergrad programs, barring research intensive majors, can be done online. Top MBAs are a filter to show that you are smart, ambitious, and confident enough to take out a 150k loan to bet on yourself.

like

Because that is what the market values MBAs at.

Don’t forget about the ~$150K (post/tax) opportunity cost

They don’t make the wage premium for what they learned, they make the wage premium because the mba is a powerful filtering, sorting, and signaling mechanism

Paying the money or incurring the debt is part of the signaling effect

Hi all! For an experienced hire as a Human Capital Consultant at Deloitte, what should I expect the salary/sign-on bonus to be at a MCOL city? I have approx. 3.5 YOE (non-consulting), MBA and MS degree (non target school) and also SHRM certified (which is probably irrelevant for the role but thought I’d share anyways). Already did my research but the range is kind of all over the place for experienced hires so just want to have a ballpark. Thanks!
