Who cares what they think? If you don’t think you’re evil then that’s all that really matters

People who choose to work at McKinsey usually have a similar thought process and view on the world.

I’ve never read “Typical McKinsey” but maybe this happens more on the consultant bowls. What I see most often is “Always Deloitte.”

People generalize and stereotype one another either to be funny or to protect themselves and make them feel better emotionally. If McKinsey does have a stereotype, I encourage you to be different. Continue to be kind and do your part to break that generalization.

likefunny

An interest thing to think about is why people have those views.

When you recieve feedback you disagree with, do you just forget or you think about why that person thought about it?

Also, the same way employers are responsible by their employees actions, what do you think is the perception about the company who lied to their clients and severely overpriced a project, and helped increase the opioid crisis?

If it makes you feel better we make similar comments about consultants in general.

Easiest explained with hyperbole. Most political organizations that commit attrocities aren't filled with people who do. It's usually a top-down effort by a few, who have a small following. Not a great idea to sign on to organizations with such groups, unless you think you can actively influence the few "evil" shot callers. By joining as someone low ranking, you're probably enabling.

The lite version of that exists in corporate. As Facebook is to tech, McKinsey is to consulting.

I would suspect all of the other firms on here are taking similarly unethical projects for unethical clients, or engaging in work that could or will be one day perceived that way. Anyone who says otherwise is probably in the dark about their company’s work (the secretive nature of consulting client rosters helps), or is really drinking the koolaid.

McK is also light years ahead of competitors when it comes to things like their fully internally funded health equity center and other philanthropic efforts. I say this as a current competitor.

It’s a strange road to go down when you start measuring company ethics against a set of constantly changing values, especially with limited information. People do, however, like to take shots at the top and see entities dethroned. That never changes.

like

I am ex-McK and didn't see any of the unethical behavior that has been found but I think it is fair to assume that what we know is the tip of the iceberg. After all I assume that Facebook is doing way more shady stuff than has been exposed so far.

You don't hear about BCG partners getting caught insider trading or ending up in jail for other stuff at near the rate of McK. They certainly have the same access. You also don't hear about other firms double dealing, advising bankruptcy restructuring and investing in the distressed debt.

What we do know indicates that McK lacks controls and ethics standards that some other firms have or are much poorer at maintaining confidentiality, either is bad.

Maybe I live under a rock, but I really have no clue about “McKinsey” to be able to generalize/stereotype anyone based on that lol. Sorry.

It’s the embodiment of all the negative characteristics of capitalism, most of the people that I met from there (including some of my friend’s) hate the poor and social programs that better society. Just seems like a ruthless place that puts profits over ethics. But the same could be said about all of our firms tbh.

like

I don’t see much “against” McK here but heard about it a lot in general, even before I started applying for consulting. I had generally negative interactions/impressions myself and many others did too (that’s why we picked something else over McK), so I guess it’s just the McK culture, which puts all 30k people in the same bucket 🤷‍♀️

like

You think McK has it bad, imagine all ~60,000 employees at fb generalized to a certain stereotype on this app amid the whistleblower claims

like

Because people are judgemental. Social media has made it even more apparent over the years.

I joined McKinsey at 55. I have had a very successful 30-year career before. It was a conscious choice (no am not a partner/not on partner track so this wasn’t just $$ even as I am paid well). I really don’t care what people say broadly about our Firm esp in chat forums. Some of it is deserved, some self-induced (lot of hubris in our ranks) and a lot also jealousy and piling on. I mostly am very comfortable with work/quality and personal ethics and values of most of the people in my team. So it doesn’t really bother me.

MCM1 seems like the McK stereotype lol

Then I went home, took a shower, got in bed, put all the containers of takeout around me and poured myself a massive glass. I put on a movie and stayed there until most of the food and the wine was gone. Felt much better.
