To confirm that they saw it, especially if it's something that needs to be tweaked/updated by a certain time the next day. I think you're reading too much into it.
Hello,
I hope this note finds you well! I'm writing to acknowledge receipt of your note, and thank you for it. I assure you that it will be actioned tomorrow morning, as it is quite late and I'm not working.
Warmest regards,
People clean out their inbox at night
It's not time sensitive, nor manager-requested.
It's also just general emails like "Thanks for sending/forwarding." I don't see why these types of emails require a midnight response. It just sets the expectation of always being "on."
Agree, stupid. People are stupid.
PFA my ack to do the needful.
It could be bragging, but I'd prefer acknowledgment of receipt so I know it's being taken care of and that I don't need to worry about it
As a Sr manager, this is something I've only ever done when people are slacking and need to be monitored, but to each his own. If it's super critical I'd call or talk face to face.
That said just cause it's sent at night doesn't mean they expect you to be up waiting for it.
Or "Oh no, I'm so busy tonight that I can't do it until tomorrow 😱"
I agree. It's just a courtesy. It doesn't imply that you are working late.
Why are you sending late night emails asking them to work on a deck?
Lol wait, clearly they're not working if they said they'll work on it tomorrow.
Personally I appreciate that sort of acknowledgement.
Honestly, here is a different perspective. I know that I personally can't stand to have email badges on my phone when I look at it...and it doesn't matter if it is the middle of the work day or if I am getting ready for bed. I'll check the email and I, too, would probably respond. It doesn't mean that I'm sitting in front of my computer cranking through something. You may call that a character flaw, but I call it peace of mind. I go to sleep knowing that I will start the day with a clean inbox and a plan of action for the day. And, you know what...I've been pretty successful with that approach. It works for me. Just because you have a different approach doesn't mean that mine is wrong. So many bitchy haters.
Baloney-they could send that from their phone at a bar!!!
My manager asks we send email acknowledging receipt. It's annoying af! But it's his way of doing things.
It's called a "Silicon Valley response." Enables folks to show up at 10 am ("I worked late last night, did you get my 3 am email?") and leave at 4 pm ("I've got a ton of busy work im going to do from the hotel/house".)
