Why do people have to work in the office? Is it a ploy to make people spend more and have more money in circulation? I spend more money when I work from the office. Miles, gas, food, drink, alcohol

I see this argument from both ways. Going to the office I believe is a waste in the sense that you do spend more money/time commuting (not to mention the detriment to the climate, but we won’t get into that). However, being in the office gives you the opportunity to actually speak with colleagues you don’t necessarily work with all the time and meet new colleagues - increasing your network and pipelines for work. Also, sometimes it honestly is just easier to work through problems when the whole team is physically sitting together in the same room rather than being on a conference call.

What is money spent on miles?

Meaning the more miles you put on your car the more maintenance it needs

Just had that same thought as I prepared for my commute this morning. Two hours lost that I could have spent working .

I think you’re replying to me, and yes. I’m very much kidding. That’s the joke. Thank you.

We’re in a transitional period right now. Working remote is thought of more as a perk than an accepted part of the job. As the older generation retires and younger workers (read: those with greater experience working remote) move up into decision-making positions, the balance will (hopefully) shift toward remote work becoming normal across many industries.

It’s a similar question to why 2 weeks of vacation was standard for so long - because old traditions are hard to change. Why is 40 hours a “standard” workweek despite being outdated and inefficient? Because it’s a deeply engrained tradition that is tough to change. (Many people will always work more than 40 hours in a week, it’s just that 40 is somehow a magic number)

like

cant wait for this transition to be over. old school folks would never adapt to the changing times. we can only wait for them to retire and get their spots filled with the new generation of more adaptable bosses.

Alcohol 🤣. And there are a lot more desk pops in the office too. I remember my last desk pop, September of ‘08.

I’m a big fan of working from home once a week, preferably on Fridays. I think you need that team interaction for most of the week (there are exceptions)

I would say the commute is the biggest hit both to me and the firm. If you're commuting to the office 1 hour each way, that's 10 hours lost charge time to the client. Seems like it's not very productive if the work can be done remotely.

like

Not really a big if, especially in PA, and working in the city. It’s easy to commute 1 hour to work in DFW and Houston

With Hoteling, I thought they don’t want us to come into the office. Go ahead and work remote on some set schedule. Ok with it. Just need some onsite time for certain project kickoff meetings.

A ploy by who? The Illuminati? Obviously PwC would love to spend zero dollars on leases, utility bills, cleaning services, receptionists, and coffee machines if they felt they could be more profitable with everyone telecommuting from their kitchen tables. Apparently in 2019 there is still value in collocation for most work teams in this industry.

In a nut shell, we had baby #1 without trying. Started trying for #2 and over 2 years, I had 4 miscarriages and 2 ectopics. In July, my doc informed me that the only way forward was through IVF. I was tired and confused. I PRAYED! and continued trying. (The rest in the comments.)
