I currently have a manager who has us leave at 5 every day. It's seriously a game changer. Actually more productive. If something is blowing up we stay and sometimes I work a little at the hotel but it's honestly been the. Eat thing ever
*been the best thing ever
Trying to understand why I seem to be the only one who wants to leave to get to dinner, exercise, or do anything other than be in the office all day/night
Old fashioned idea that working long = working hard
Honestly I get most of my work done in 3-4 hours each day. The rest of the time is spent making sure that I look busy. It's so damn stupid, I'm capable of so much more.
A lot of consultants actually have no life and no friends and they use work as an excuse why they don't. They "love" staying at work
I just work with people that think working till 9 makes them more important or better, therefore we work late. For example, we'll have a deck ready for review by the partner/client at 5pm, but we'll do 2 more turns until 10pm just because we can.

Had this same discussion a few weeks ago. Still didn't get an answer
Because my SM decided we would give the client three deliverables per week to show that we are doing something. So now I work on shitty quality deliverables trying to salvage them when I don't have time to focus on the big picture and solve the clients problems.
If the utilization targets weren't ridiculous (>95%) with PTOs and form holidays counting against your utilization, people would be more comfortable 1. Not working long hours and 2. Entering the right number of hours
I am with you OP. I leave at 6.30, go to the gym, head out to dinner and manage just fine...
I tend to get to the office later than my peers, so I make a point of staying later as well

I am with you !!
The only times it really makes sense are when I need a dual monitor or when we are working on serious brainstorm/white board type work.
I got this answer multiple times, specially when at the client site and that is: perception.
I'm hearing about billable hours way to much lately at our place, and way too little about the quality of the work. People are rewarded for taking longer to deliver if the can bill more. So being an unproductive worker is rewarded, and getting your job done by 5 is looked down upon.
Maybe it makes some people feel more important ?
I'm on a project where this is happening all the time! For all the talk about consultants working smart it sure as hell don't feel like that when you have to work so many hours. The whole idea in working smart is so that you don't spend your evenings in the office....but like ATK-1 said, some people think working long hours = doing a good job
