I’ve lived there for 14 years.
It’s the excellent bars, nightlife, music venues, food, shopping, and beautiful city parks.
When I was first there it felt very much like a place for art students, aspiring musicians and creators of all kinds.
It’s been significantly gentrified since then but now I see a new groundswell of young politicians and community leaders who are trying to do positive things like advocate/develop more public space, curb the speed of development and campaign for more affordable housing.
Above all it’s location location location. You’re 1 stop to the lower east side and east village, 20-30 mins from midtown, 20-30 mins from Chelsea and 15 mins from Bushwick. You’ve also got some of the best panoramic views of the city within walking or running distance.
It’s close enough to Manhattan but more bang for your buck, amazing views of the city, great food & nightlife.
Small-town feel with a distinct culture, dining, waterfront; stoop culture, parks and it feels like a community.
Fun bars for going out without the hustle of going out in les. Some of the best restaurants in nyc. Definitely the best yoga studios
I’m personally not a fan because I feel the public transportation options are so limited, so I always wonder the same question as you
With the L fully operational, it’s actually really good in terms of PT.
It can be a “small town” within a city while still being international and feel very relevant and current
It's the mecca for recently graduated kids who work in finance
You’re thinking of Murray hill
I don’t live in Williamsburg but I do live in Brooklyn (park slope) and after 5 yrs in Manhattan I wanted to move out to Brooklyn for the feeling of a small town within 20 mins of downtown Manhattan. The food scene/ nightlife for me is better out here. I still go into Manhattan probably once a week to see friends, but I aged out of wanting to club in Chelsea and les every week. I still go maybe once a month but it’s nice to know I can retreat to my backyard and dog when I want to while still being like 5 stops away from Manhattan.
Which part? North, East and South are each very very different…
West.. definitely West
