Women In Consulting

Why do people stay in consulting after having children at the C, SC, or M level? I'll be in that decision making position myself soon and I don't feel the tradeoffs for staying are worth it.

The practice I'm a part of has great flexibility. I currently work remote with ~10% travel. Each person is able to choose their own travel expectations and the ability to work from home is great for having a family! I'm having a baby in June, and I feel good about staying in consulting with this flexibility.

The term primary care giver is a little odd when you are talking about dual income homes. We both are equal care givers. Anyway, I really enjoy the work I do and the people I work with. I have built a strong support network with a couple partners (I am a PL- so manager level) that work with me to limit travel and give me the time off I need. Our company has amazing benefits. There are times when I have mommy guilt- but I don’t think that ever changes with job. You will always find a reason to have it. If I ever get to the point where I can’t find teams willing To accommodate me, I will leave. I’ve made that very clear.

This level of insight is exactly the perspective I need! Thanks! My initial post should have said and if you stay, how do you make it work. I'm hearing a support system, which in your case is: nanny, equal parenting input from partner, and occasional family support.

Many of my clients work at night, after the kids go to bed. Or wake early and work. Industry may not get you a different WLB than a local consulting model.

What industry are you in? In this role and previous ones I haven't gotten too many emails outside of 8:30am-6pm from most clients. And almost never anything where a response was expected before business hours. Every pharma office I've ever been in starts getting quiet around 4/4:30pm. Usually crickets by 6pm.

I totally agree. I’m quitting after my first one and gonna start a new chapter elsewhere. I don’t really know what it is yet but I rather just focus on delivering a healthy baby first and then figure out my life after. The WLB balance is just impossible. Plus I live in New York which is one of the workaholic cities. So I’m just not into it anymore

Consider your understanding of what “great paying job” you are thinking of. You MIGHT be able to get a sizable increase if you go to industry (or you might just get a very average one because many industries consider consultants valuable but overpaid and feel that giving them a better WLB is worth not meeting your comp expectations.) Then prepare yourself for merit increases which are often disappointing and less appealing incentive compensation opportunities and you are very quickly not making what you could have made if you stayed in consulting. Obviously this is a very money-centric line of thought but that is honestly the reason I will stay in consulting. (Background - I did compensation planning/market analysis for a major FSI firm prior to joining consulting.)

100% agree. I just hate that I have friends who have gone to industry without thinking the compensation thing through! Best of luck with everything!

Asking because I am curious what those tradeoffs would be? Are you thinking the lack of WLB is making it impossible to balance family and career within a consulting firm?

Yes, concerns over WLB. There are some posts talking about how parents will be firm about being offline 6-8pm, but then work again later in the night or having their spouse drive on weekend trips so they can work in the passenger seat. None of this sounds appealing to me, particularly when I can take my skills and get a less demanding, but still well paying job elsewhere. So honestly curious as to why some people stay. Are they not the primary caregiver? Are they saving for private school, etc?

In my city, almost all our projects are local because all the big clients are down the street :)

Since this is cross industry bowl, so wanted to have better insights through your experience. I have visual studio 2017 and joined a team who are currently developing on Visual Studio 2019. Will there be any significant impact on the project code just because of ide version change? P. S. I have very limited internet quota based on my current location and downloading new version will be literally not possible.
