Why do previous generations feel the need to belittle the hard work of younger people? My parents always insist they used to put in as many hours as I do when they were my age, but I know it’s not true because I was actually old enough to remember it! (They could afford having a kid. I can’t)

They don’t understand differing inflation rates. Growth of wages vs growth of costs.

We belittle them too lol you think “ok boomer” isn’t hurtful?

I think there are a lot of issues at play here. Some of them financial, some of them cultural, some of them just plain human nature. Older generations love complaining about how lazy the younger generations are. Hell, there were writing from ancient Greece and Babylon complings how lazy the "kids these days" were. Looking at the lazt millennial trope more closely, it falls apart almost immediately. Work productivity is up nearly 3 times since the 70s. That being said, real wages are flat since then. So young Gen Xers and Millenals work harder for less money.

I dug into this as well and what my grandma told me was: We do see you guys working very very hard, long days. Always tired, always chores. And then you burnout and take an extravagant vacation. We did neither. Neither worked or stessed this much. Nor splurged this much. If I coddle you, it'll feel validating for a moment, but might make it harder to get up and grind this hard tomorrow. The world is competitive, you gotta do what you need to come out successful, so just keep going.

OP, some of this could be family related. My whole family (spouse, parents, siblings) all have corporate jobs, grind long hours behind a laptop or did med school. And tend to vacation with Europe trips or Hawaiian resorts. She's specifically referring to us (the family), not the instagram generation as a whole. In contrast, grandpa had a good career and she was a great housewife. She raised 3 successful kids, played badminton, volunteered locally and took yearly vacations domestically to weddings and family gatherings.

Their views of younger generations are entirely shaped by social media and they don't understand that it's not reality. I also feel like they correlate financial success with hard work. So the economy was better in their days, but they think Millennials are lazy because of how little wealth they own.

I’m turning 30 in a month. My boyfriend and I have talked about getting engaged but I’m not sure when he’ll propose (probably after the pandemic is over when we can go on trips safely). I’m realizing that if he waits until after the pandemic, it’s going to be at least a year until the actual wedding. Then I had always planned on being married for a few years before getting pregnant. I’m having major fertility anxiety. Any advice?

I’m curious to hear from people at other firms what is offered in terms of part time work or alternative work options for people that don’t really care about making partner and might want to work part time. I just had my second child and want to ask to come back from maternity leave on a part time basis but our firm doesn’t seem to have anything in place right now. If your firm offers this, what’s the billable requirement, how much of a pay cut is it, and do you still get benefits? Thanks!

I work with several people with kids and I have noticed quite often that they completely disregard any issues of people with no kids and try to one up work life imbalance conversations with stories of them being parents. It must be hard being a parent but I don’t think people at work should be treated differently or given any additional consideration just because they have a kid. You already get parental leave so If I’m expected to work 12hr I ask the same to be expected from my peers with kids.
