Why do recruiters always want to talk on the phone?

Wouldn't it save us both time to just send me the job description and I'll let you know if I'm interested or if there is a match?

The recruiters that want to talk are the good ones. It's called relationships. They're interested in who you are, not just what's on paper.

Also, for efficiency, a phone call saves sooo much time compared to email. Seriously, it drives me nuts that so many people avoid phone calls and it takes days to set up simple meetings as a result.

Because you get a sense of how a person truly is by chatting via phone vs an email exchange where you have time to compose your answer instead of being able to answer a question on the fly.

You can also get a sense if the individual at hand will be a good fit for the company (e.g. can make light conversation, has a sense of humor, etc.)

It shows through the comments who is older and more experienced versus younger / less experienced, LOL.

OP, and especially because you're account, why in the world would you not want to talk to them on the phone? This is always, ALWAYS, an opportunity to sell yourself and your personality, to elaborate on who you are and what your background is way beyond a resume or a LinkedIn profile ever could. Further, you'll learn over time that recruiters have many other open positions that may come up during organic conversation that might be more suitable than the one they contacted you for. Also, recruiters use ATS software, Applicant Tracking system, and keep very detailed notes about each person from the phone calls so they can scan their database in the future for other potential opportunities. They document dates and what you said you're looking for and your background is. All half decent ones do this. Even if you have 10 bad experiences in a row, you never know who the one good one will be so you should take the call and have nothing to lose. It's networking and building relationships. It's also a wonderful learning opportunity for you to polish your story and practice your personal presentation and interviewing skills. Since recruiters screen candidates and have the power to recommend them to hiring managers, my advice is to use every chance you get to become better at this process.
I do recruiting part time and I've also worked with them as a hiring manager.
Good luck, I know this process can be taxing.

My bigger issue with phone calls is that I’m at work a lot of the time. And phone rooms/conference rooms are very hard to come by!

Agree with CD1 - really good recruiters, the kind you want take the time to talk with you. They want to hear want you want and how you respond to their questions. They can help get you into places if they know you. They also want to know who they are sending. The candidates they send, especially at mid and senior levels, represent their work. Their ability to vet a candidate and match them to the specs. Without the conversation they have less of an idea of who you are

Yes! I’ve had recruiters call me to do things that are way more efficient over email like coordinate interview times. Drives me crazy!

My manager asked me to attend a company presentation after work hours. She basically told me, since you're the most social, you should get other people into it, which i dont mind, but no one wants to go to this event. She herself isn't even attending it and i feel like as a manager she's setting a bad example and not being a good leader.

This general strike talk has really got me re-evaluating my whole career. I can’t complain about compensation, I’m paid well, I have benefits, and I have a roof over my head. But the work life balance and unsustainable productivity expectations that have been created by agencies that won’t say no to clients needs to change. We place/create ads to turn millionaires into billionaires while we’re treated terribly. Something’s gotta give. I don’t know a single person who isn’t burnt out right now
