If you don’t go through the recruiter and reach out to the firm personally, they don’t get their $. That would be my guess.
Agreed. I just stopped working with them and found my own. No fee as well. Got it before the markets went wild this year.
The recruiter's fear is that once they tell you the name of the firm, you'll apply directly. The recruiter's logic is if you're serious enough to get on a quick call with them, you won't take the firm name and apply themselves. They know they'll lose some candidates this way, but recruiters can get enough interested candidates from an email blast (as well as candidates who would take the "quick call") such that they don't feel a burning need to share firm names in the email to a candidate they don't know and haven't established trust with. This is my guess, but I can see both sides of this.
My guess is that they don't get "credit" for your application unless they do that?
I clerked for a federal judge in NYC but didn’t go to a top law school. A recruiter I worked with during clerking tried to get me to do asbestos litigation in Nj for $65,000 per year!!! I said I wanted a top firm and they said to “be realistic” and that I could never get a vault firm. So I got MULTIPLE offers through connections, sent them to the recruiter, who was shocked and had “no idea they were hiring.” 😂

They’re salesmen. It’s easier for us to say no over email than over the phone. Also, been told they have daily requirements for phone calls with prospects.
I ask for the firm name, practice, group, and comp off the bat. If they give me the hop on a call response, I ignore. If they follow up via email. I ask the same exact question. Rinse repeat.
I find the more senior recruiters will give you the details right off the bat. They get it.
