You don’t need to be from the south to use the word “y’all.” While it certainly originated from the south, I think most people find it easier to say (ie, rolls off your tongue faster) as opposed to all of you or you all, etc.
Say whatever your heart desires. You, y’all, youse...
The Paris of Appalachia
its faster than saying You All.
‘Cause we can.

Gender neutral term which has increased non-Southern adoption
Yep! English doesn’t have a nice, easy gender neutral second person plural, other than y’all
Depends, we talking about y’all, or all y’all?

Glad to see there’s native southerner here.
It’s such a convenient word. The south just got some things right, and this is one.
I grew up in the Midwest but I’ve lived in Texas for 7 years now. The y’all kicked in after 2 lol
I said you guys and got called out by ppl who thinks it’s inappropriate because it’s not all inclusive ..I’m a girl too and think it’s silly but makes sense so started saying y’all
I also like 'folks' and 'team'
I went to school in the South

I’m guessing other born and raised southerners here will agree, the “I went to school in the South” folks claiming Southern habits is like Michael Scott saying “ya mon” or playing steel drums after he returns from Sandals Jamaica 😂

Same reason non-Texans/non-cowboys wear cowboy boots 🤷♂️
No one should ever wear cowboy boots
Because “you guys” sounds disrespectful to me as a southerner.

y'all is used to differentiate between "you" (1 person) and "you" (many people).
I was recently criticized for using it in a client email by someone on my project for it being too casual... please normalize y’all.
Learned it from a southern childhood classmate. It's easy to say and I've avoided "you guys" for years. Now I use "everyone" or "you folks" in more formal settings.
Easier than “you all”, more inclusive than “you guys”
No clue. Born and raised in the South (and still live here ) and I've been resisting my whole life.
The Midwest is just as country, if not more. And for those of us that took Latin, it's just the plural second person...a normal part of the language.

Yeah but second person plural of “y’all” is “all y’all.”
I say coup d’etat and I’m not from france...
