At our office we were told we need leadership more than ever and that’s why no department heads were let go. 🧐🤔
What’s the point of a leader ship if that ship has no crew
That’s not it. These are global corporations. Omnicom and WPP etc But easily mandate losing a certain number of executive level jobs. Department heads aren’t making these decisions there happening in New York, London, Paris. Our clients would much rather keep the people working on the project due today that the person five levels of who goes to one meeting a quarter.
None of our department heads have client relationships. Actually head of accounts does, but seriously none of the other department heads. Those relationships are with the director-level (aka CD, Account Director, strat director).
All of our senior folks are way more involved In everyday work than ever before because the stakes are so high. Like our CCO joined a deck review this week that would not have happened six weeks ago. If anything it feels like remote working will hurt the training of more junior folks because senior folks are just making calls, no ones got the time to go through four rounds of a brief on teams. But making the best of it.
As a department head, we aren’t calling the shots. We have let go department heads here before, but we don’t when we end up needing to make tough cuts that create super lean teams, because two intermediate folks can’t keep multiple businesses on the rails but one department head should be able to.
