Why do the recruiters I work with not respond to my emails? It’s getting ridiculous, and can’t do anything about it if I’ve already sent out applications through them.

Stop working with them. Honestly unless you are a super well qualified candidate - it’s always better to self submit or try to get a referral through your network. Recruiters focus on the easiest placements and stretch candidates are often left in the lurch.

The world is small. Recruiters are greedy. Say you want to chat with them about a friend who is looking and to catch up. They'll call.

I’ve been there. I can recommend the one I ultimately went with! She came through for me after a string of terrible ones who did exactly what you described.

There are so many bad recruiters out there. Most of them flame out within a year or two. The good ones do not ghost their candidates, no matter what is going on with their candidacy.

I’m sorry that has been your experience. If it was just once, I would try to give the benefit of the doubt - maybe they are going through something at home or are sick or something. But I don’t really understand why someone would not return a call or email, and unfortunately, I’ve heard it a lot. How long has it been? If it has been a while, you might want to contact the firm directly to see if your application has been submitted. Then, if it hasn’t, you can apply on your own. If you ultimately would like to work with another recruiter, I recommend interviewing them first. Ask them how they work and set expectations for communication and regular updates. Make it clear that you expect to be treated with respect and that ghosting is unacceptable. People can suck sometimes. It’s always best to try to preempt problems.

The most annoying part of an interview process “create a presentation on our product you know nothing about and present it to 3 people who know every last detail about the product”. It’s not a shortage of people applying, it’s the unnecessarily long interview processes. When many companies are now adapting this, no one has time to put together multiple presentations after normal working hours. Hiring has gotten so complicated for no reason.

How do you turn down a low offer?
I just received an offer from a place I really wanted to be but the position they’ve decoded to offer is a step back. Worse yet, the pay is even less than my direct reports earn let alone what I make. I’m not taking it personally and am instead chalking it up to a disconnect between their needs and my skills. Still, I feel the need to explain how far off they were. Should I go into detail in my rejection email or just keep it simple as one normally does?

Weird question: so, I come from defense side, but am currently working as a plaintiffs litigator. I have applied to a defense firm and I’m currently in the mix of finalists. Coincidentally, I happen to be opposing counsel in a case staffed by one of the firm’s partners. He and I have a good professional rapport and mutual respect. I don’t think he’s on the hiring committee, so I doubt that he’s aware of my candidacy at his firm. But I think he would be an excellent reference. Can I say anything?
