At 50??? Hahaha hell no more like 28 ..
Belonging is a core human need. It’s biological and we have a better survival rate if accepted by the group. The problem isn’t in caring what other people think, it’s that the majority of people are judgy and think it’s okay to cast people out.
No man is an island.
Our character and personality is built off our interactions with people in our lives. I think it's healthy and necessary to care about what others think about us. What we have to mind is who the "others" our and evaluate why and how much of their opinion matters to us.

The older I get the less I care.
Because we live under the illusion that they are
Most people are culturally taught to derive their self worth from external evaluations. That’s why new parents are now being told not to use evaluative language with kids
Because we are taught as kids to act a certain way and we will be rewarded. If not, you will be punished.
Because we think that pleasing people gets us ahead in life and we change our lives based on what others think and feel. It’s living in torture
