Finds from my recent travels!

Cheers to a good Sunday!

Tonight. Something a little different!

My dad was a Scotch man (even though he didn’t drink it neat I still loved him) so I just prefer that. The tariffs have definitely pinched, so Bourbon becomes the daily driver and the Scotch for weekends and special occasions.
Bourbons are probably easier to get into. Less peaty, more fruity. They are also “local” in the sense most of us can more easily relate to a bottle distilled in Tennessee or Kentucky than one in Islay or the highlands.
Finally, when going out you usually have a better chance of finding a decent selection of bourbons at a decent price than scotch.
Personally, I find they complement each other. Scotch is more an intimate and relaxing drink I would sip neat and slowly by myself while I would usually more enjoy an old fashioned or a bourbon on ice when going out.
For me the value in bourbon makes it easier to get into...
Bourbon has become very trendy and has gained a mainstream (GQ endorsed) following in the past decade so that might also add to this current trend. If you mostly drink bourbon and get accustomed to the profile and taste, scotch is a new beast to learn to enjoy (especially if you end up trying a Laphroaig as your first scotch)
I’ve only tried a couple scotches but haven’t really been a fan of the peaty flavor. The one scotch I have been a fan of was Lagavulin 16
Not all Scotch is peaty. Check out Balvenie double wood, that's my daily Scotch drinker and has zero peat. I probably prefer Scotches like that to most Bourbons.
This is all conjecture but it feels like the US bourbon marketing budget is larger and more targeted. I rarely see scotch ads here. I prefer Scotch, am in clubs, watch whisky tubers, consume reviews, the lot. Single malts feel like they have less content compared to bourbon.
Because bourbon tastes better... obviously
How would you compare a $50 Bourbon vs a similarly priced Scotch? As an example - Woodford Reserve Double Oaked vs Macallan 12
Rising Star
Blanton's is overrated.

I 100% agree
I suppose it depends too on where you started. My grandfather drank Dewars and water every day and my uncle introduced me to some good neat single malts early. That and the first bourbon I tried was was plain jane Jim Beam - can’t drink the stuff straight with cringing. So I’m only just now getting into bourbons.

Perhaps there are just more Americans in this bowl and bourbon has become the locals’ drink? I myself much prefer malt whisky or good Japanese blends to bourbon, but do like a good rye
