I am a mid 20s young professional. I am an extrovert. I see work socials as a great opportunity to make friends and bond with people in a non-work related setting.
Given the last 2 years we’ve had, I’m surprised that people don’t understand colleagues wanting to get to know each other.
It may have been great for you to do everything via teams and not be in an office but many others hate it.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Why do people not love socials? Answer: we’re all different.
So this was a pretty pointless post then.
What makes you think most people love socials? In a consulting team where I used to work I would say ~50% of people hated it - basically anyone who had family / kids / lived far away went and left as soon as they could usually. Younger people would generally enjoy them as it was just another way to party.
I honestly don't like them too much, they drain my energy and take up my time, however I do find them useful. It's a good way to get to know the people around you and work better as a team. At least this way you have things to talk about rather than just work. I think it also helps with being less frustrated at your colleagues as we're all human. I think a big part of many people quitting is also related to the lack of socials as they had no positive parts about the workplace, just stress. I'd kill for a Christmas party right now just to say I'm not only doing my projects (cancelled due to covid).
