I love the DC area and plan to stay. I came here from the Southwest and have made it 16 years. Yes, it is expensive and crowded in places but there are so many advantages. Great schools, museums, restaurants, lots of activities, lots of job opportunities. Just need the Wizards sand Nationals to do better
Because living in the city is better than MD or VA, and no I will not be staying.
I have lived here more than 5 years and loved the city. My families are not here. Over the last 8 months I have been traveling for an engagement. And slowly I dissociated myself from the city and it no longer feels like home to me. But I don’t know where home is..
A2 “Beautiful seasons” Have you been here for a summer
Very well educated population, great cultural/sports/other group opportunities, city is easy to get around in and doesn’t feel overwhelming. Very good weather, at least relative to Boston and New York. Generally easy to meet people and make friends. Very walkable and dense without being exhausting.
SO doing her PhD. We may stay since she has family here and grew up in the area, but we’ll see. I like the area for the most part but we both went to school in the Bay and like that better. Not really an indictment of DC, just an endorsement of the Bay
Grew up here and my family still lives here. The only other cities I’d entertain as an option (New York and San Francisco) are too expensive, so DC it is!
Grew up in the burbs. Love the diversity and education levels. Doubt we will leave- job market is always strong.
Just left DC for the West Coast. I clearly am attached to DC in some manner, I can’t leave this bowl just yet...
I left bc I was commuting West for a year plus. My life was spent on a plane. I chose San Diego. Better weather hands down and rent for my own 800sq apartment is 2000$. More affordable than my 2200$ rent in DC. Just as close to the SAN airport as DCA as well. I truly made the right decision for me and honestly I should have made it sooner. I’m so happy here
DC has negatives like every other city, but overall I always want to come back if I’m gone awhile. Feels like home. (Speaking as a childless LGBT’er). Great transit, including airports for consulting lifestyle nothing beats DCA. 4 seasons. Yea summer can suck, but so it is everywhere unless your winter sucks + you’re 2 hours or less from a beach. Smart, highly educated people. Very networked city. TONS to do and it it keeps getting better whether sports, culture, concerts...
spouse is a fed but I’d love to move to a smaller, cheaper city and have a simpler life
Ey1 can’t necessarily speak for my spouse but works in foreign policy, does meaningful work, makes six figures, has a reliable schedule. It’s a good enough reason for now, but trying to raise kids could change the math
Why would you leave? What comparable city has better weather and is more affordable?
Been here for 12 years and depends on real estate
Came for work. Likely not, can’t afford to do what I think I should
Being a Fed shouldn't keep you in this place. The benefits and pay aren't good enough these days.
Diverse cultures, educated ppl, beautiful seasons, family
to me, some comparable cities with better weather, good jobs, and similar affordability or better: atlanta, charlotte, miami, LA, denver
EY2 do you mind if I ask if you are Caucasian? Only ask because I personally also LOVE San Diego but my concern is that I didn’t think it was very diverse compared to DC (particularly not many African Americans which is what my bf is). What are your thoughts?
