I teach because I love it and I love helping teenagers start figuring their lives out. Specific things about me I guess I’m patient and empathetic to students, especially disadvantaged populations. I advocate for students above everything, and advocate for my fellow teachers when we aren’t being supported (and therefore can’t support our kids). I do a lot of improvement projects for my school, I look for ways to adapt our programs or implement new ones to help the students. I also write on the side on education issues, in the hopes that it will bring awareness to issues relating to school, students, and teachers.

I love the "bad" kids that teachers have already formed their opinion about. I love to calm them down when they're angry & have been thrown out the rm, I love to give them hugs and take time to be with them and hear them because they probably don't get that at home.

Dropping this in a few bowls, sorry if you see it twice. I'm transitioning from teaching 8th grade mathematics at a public school to teaching a 7/8 self-contained classroom at a charter school. Any advice for teaching mixed grade levels or multi subject is appreciated: scheduling, classroom setup, subject order, behavior management, etc. I'm struggling to find my rhythm with only 6 weeks before kids return. Thanks to everyone for your commitment and time, enjoy your summer!

I took advantage of Verizon’s Black Friday deals and got myself the new iPhone yesterday. I’m AMAZED by all the neat things it can do. One of my favorites is that you can grab text from a picture and have it read aloud. This would be so helpful for my students with vision needs and those with reading disabilities. When do we think we’ll actually see this technology in the classroom? Can’t very well put “iPhone” on a students assistive tech section of their IEP 😂

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Carolinas and I was curious if anyone can give me information about how special education services are typically provided in your state. Do you primarily push in to the classrooms or do you pull students out to individualize their programs? At my school here in Wyoming, my paras work with students in the classroom and I pull individual students and small groups into my room throughout the day to work on their specific IEP Goals.

Now that a vaccine is here the reality of going back to the classroom is getting closer to become a reality. I am wondering about how we can help the students begin to practice self management skills now before going back to the classroom. What are some things we can practice virtually that will be used in the classroom?

Anyone here do Scholastic book orders in their middle level classrooms? How do you get it to work?

I will be teaching Chemistry this year in a modular classroom with no lab area. Any suggestions on virtual labs? We have chromebooks at ourvschool.

Our school has a very diverse population, but our district and building don’t embrace it very well, so I decided to start in my own classroom. I talked to my kids about family origins and then surprised them with a flag from each country of origin. Now when they walk in there is a small representation of who they are. It also sparks conversation about where the different flags are from and shows students just how diverse we all are. So far the kids love it and we’ve had some great conversations.

The rate was really good - more than the fintech company was offering as annual salary. Rate was 160/HR and fintech was 275K TC. The benefits are ok - it’s a W2 contractor. But I’m thinking of...
