No better options

You mean like relationships? Probably like A1 said, no better options.
I meant leave a consulting firm and decide to come back.

Money. I got a huge raise switching firms from a Big 4. I would never have left if not for money. I could see myself going back for another large raise, as I loved it there too, for different reasons
People leave due to more money or they are working in bad conditions. Someone from their old firm who they trust then reaches out to them later and offers them a higher position, with even more money, and BTW "we fixed the bad conditions, you'll be working directly with me"
I know a *lot* of people who have left the place we've been at (Deloitte is the fifth company I've worked for) because things were so terrible, only to realize that things were much worse at the new place.
One guy who boomeranged left a C role to take a M role in industry, only to discover that the role, while it paid well, was essentially to create spreadsheets for two people at the twilight of their careers. He came back after six months.
Plenty of people have left and come back on the condition that they would never work for a particular manager again, or if a manager they really like decides to come back, they might come back too.
All sorts of reasons!
I've been in consulting since starting my career. I think it would be valuable to have some industry experience, but ultimately think I'd go back after.

The grass turned out not to be greener on the other side. Then people return to the devil they knew rather than deal with their current devil or risk a new one.
