Because asians don't compete against other minorities for space, asians compete against whites.
Should elaborate, asians compete mostly against whites while NOT getting any special minority considerations.
I graduated from a M7 b-school.
On the application, I was black/Hispanic.
Outside of the application, I was Asian.
Asians in general have very competitive backgrounds and tend to test higher on tests. So when evaluating asians, any asian with a score that's not spectacular is not spectacular. I was told this by an admission consultant. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this statement.
I went to a top 5 MBA, felt like there were more Asians from Asia than Asian Americans TBH.
Because AsianAmericans do so well. If you admitted to top MBA schools solely on results, or even in the quality of the applicant pool, there would be way more AsianAmericans in The too MBA classes. They are systematically discriminated against to promote other groups.
You see the opposite of this in NYCs top selective public high school. By law they admit solely by test scores. They are hugely competitive and send endless kids to the top colleges. They are like 90% Asian.
There's a ratio of candidates from each demographic profile. Asians, as EY1 said, tend to perform well in tests and tend to be reasonably successful, due to a variety of factors. You're basically competing in a highly competitive group for a limited number of spots; I would actually argue you're not competing with white Americans, you're competing with other Asian-Americans, and there's a smaller number of those accepted than whites.
S&1 really? How did that go down in interviews? I look east Asian and have a Chinese last name but have a pacific islander grandma. Idk if it would blowback on me
Can those who went to more secluded areas (Fuqua, Tuck, Yale) chime in?
Thanks all! How was the percentage ish breakdown?
@M1, they don’t send endless kids to top colleges. The NYC prep schools send a much higher percentage of their class to top colleges, and it’s not even close. The NYC prep schools also practice systemic discrimination against Asians (although if they don’t take federal funds, that may be allowed)
@Slalom, it was never brought up in interviews.
McK1 they are trying to change this Btw, not sure if it's happened or not. Tldr they will limit the number of students each school can send. Since asians are mostly concentrated in a few schools, this effectively puts a cap on the asians that can get in.
