For the love of money
Agree with BCG and would like to add this simple perspective:
I can‘t imagine myself doing the job of the majority of client counter parts - worst would be if a consultant comes along to do a project with me.
Depressing almost to think being on the other side...
I am equally curious - what's wrong without having a consultant to help you? I once hired a specialized consultant who was helping me and it was a great experience to have him.
If you’re defining everyone by ‘Fishbowl users’ then you’re really only getting about 5% of people who are in the industry....
Most people don’t stay. Most do the 2-3 years and move into industry or go to grad school.
Pros:
Money
Smart co-workers
Interesting work with C-suite exposure and impact
Resume stamp,exits ops, alumni network
Cons:
Lifestyle isn’t sustainable for most people in the long run
Typically happens during s period of life that should include building your personal life (solidifying bonds with friends, finding a partner, etc)
Depending on how you value the above items, you may be in the 2-3 bucket or the much smaller 3+ bucket
I’d also add everyone doesn’t stay in consulting. Most people see it as a means to an end, do their 2 years and leave
For me to exit to a typical industry job right now I’d be looking at about a 15-20K pay cut.. no thanks. I also like the flexibility of consulting and 5 weeks of PTO. Most industry jobs unfortunately start at 2-3 weeks and that’s not enough for me
It’s encouraged to take all 5 weeks every year by almost everyone I work with and know in the company. I personally always take my computer to help out in emergencies and like to offer support to my peers anyways
I like it. I have tons of freedom in consulting (though I've taken a bunch of weird roles). The pay is pretty good. I usually work from home. My coworkers are generally intelligent. My partners are pretty reasonable. I'm not sure what else I need.
With consulting, there’s the opportunity to work with various clients. There’s usually an end which is great when you are on something boring or stressful. In industry, you’re more than likely working with the same people with little change. You work role is mostly the same unless you get promoted or switch departments. Depending on your track, you may see a substantial pay cut and high lay-off risk as well.
Human beings are competitive. It’s not always rational. You don’t like your neighbours making more money than you. Even if that means you are worse off working those hours
Not that I mean to stay in consulting forever, but in my experience the job has gotten more interesting over time (approaching 4 years now). If you like the direction that you/your responsibilities are growing in, combine that with good/increasing salary and growing comfort in an expanding network, then there can be fairly strong considerations to stay put. Some of this depends on your company and how much agency you have/assert in terms of shaping your job to the lifestyle that you want.
Great point. The business is ripe for massive disruption by a company that allows individuals to bring their individual skills to business problems
I LOVE consulting. I could not imagine doing anything else
The money is great and the exit opportunities are plentiful. I’m also looking for an exit opportunities as well (ideally FAANG or high-rated start-up).
