Of course they would all say theyre “obsessed” with both. The official line is they want to win awards. But that doesnt make any money now (if it ever did), so they do whatever they have to to stay open. And the more theyre “about client service,” meaning doing terrible work, the harder it is to convince anyone they could do anything award winning. And as long as Im being a cynical jaded downer—even if they won a ton of awards, theres not a financial upside to it. Its not like clients call you up and say “I saw you won six Cannes Lions this year—thats the kind of work I want to do.” No. The only attractive thing clients see in awards case study videos is that the agency did a bunch of work for free.

@SC1, are you thinking of an agency in the last few years that won big awards, and then got big paying AOR clients? I havent heard about that but I would like to. @SC2 I wouldnt say grift, Id say total shift in priorities. Ive said it before here, but in New Advertising the #1 priority for clients is to save money. The #1 priority for agencies is to stay open. Awards are just a whole other planet now, they just dont really matter unless people are changing jobs.

Because it’s a business lol. The reason they do business is so they can continue to exist. If people are having fun or making amazing art that inspires people along the way, that’s a plus but that’s not the goal

Sorry if i sound flippant. i agree with you and i also wish clients were more willing to take risks or push boundaries. i tend to be pretty cynical about the economic system that we are beholden to
