Why don't district's understand that some students just NEED adult support, to be successful?

I have been a para for 22 years. The teachers I work with does not have to tell me how to do my job. I sometimes do the teachers job when they are working on the millions of other jobs teachers are expected to do daily. My coworker are the best at what they do.

Unfortunately, I am out on medical leave until next month. I do have a GREAT sub but he has no constant IA throughout the day. He does have 2 1:1 paras in the same class. I am sooooo lucky to have him.
I do not like using the term sub and tried a few years ago to change out to the guest teacher. Admin said no. Is anyone still using sub or do you have a better term?

It's called money and trained support, not just babysitters that stay with one student for years.

Our parents can't request an aide technically. Some admin let them but I don't. I listen if they don't want a particular one.

like

Because far too many admins have no basis in/clear understanding of special ed and try to hold them to gen ed standards. In my experience, a lot of principals want to stay far away from SPED and toss us to the AP to deal with.

I'll never forget one assistant principal I had for two years. I had been informed that a medically fragile student may have been cleared by her doctor to leave homebound and come to a regular school. The kiddo was 2nd grade age if I recall correctly, but her IEP had goals along the lines of distinguishing colors by blinking. I was trying to give this AP a heads up about the situation. Her response? "Well, you'll have a lot of work to do to get her ready for state testing then." She then turned and walked away as if I were gum she'd just scraped off the bottom of her shoe. As it turned out the student was not cleared to return.

I've been fortunate enough to (by and large) have great admins who are supportive and understanding, at least when I sit down and explain things, but I have also had a few doozies under whom I would never want to work again.

I wrote a huge email yesterday clarifying a lot of things for my principal.

In my district the approval or denial of a para is based on the data we present to our bldg coordinator, not the principal.

My principal had to sign off on the paperwork before I can send out to district for approval.

I have an offer to a commercial real estate company in hand. My current brokerage (residential focus) wants me to pay $3000 penalty since I’m breaking the contract and leaving. I’m financially struggling and 3k is a big number to pay now. The new job will be paying me $2000/month up until the first year only. Is it wise to pay or stick around in residential sales just to avoid that penalty?

Hello Fishes,

1) Does LTI offer any variable pay ?
2) Do they provide relocation & air-fare reimbursement (irrespective of grade/band) ?
3) I don't want any specifics but how is Citi Bank production support project ? If anyone working in this project please share experience.

There’s nothing like waking up to a call on August 1 from my district coordinator telling me that they want to move me from my middle school resource room SpEd position (which I love) to K-5 Setting 3 SpEd position. I told her all the reasons that won’t work for me and even gave her another idea that would require a non-licensed teacher to be moved so I could take her place at the hs. So, I’ll be spending my Monday applying for a new job in another district. How’s your Monday going so far? 😭😔

I teach PPCD, and our district just announced that we are starting the school year regularly, with the option for online learning. My students are 3-5 years old, and some medically fragile. I imagine my most severe students will be kept home, but some may still come. Keeping them seated, or distanced is almost impossible. We also have a lot of g-tubes, all are in diapers, and a lot of chewers. I feel overwhelmed already with trying to make the room safer. Is it even possible? Any ideas?

What do you use to progress monitor your students in math and reading?

Iowa uses the Internet for IEP progress monitoring data collection. In addition to collecting our data, we are required (or at least supposed to...) put our data into the computer every two weeks. The putting it into the computer in a timely fashion is where almost every teacher in our building struggles. I use a paper "spreadsheet" to see progress or lack thereof, but does anyone have tips for an easy process to input data into the doggone computer every two weeks?

Sometimes you just have to laugh at our situation. We have a more challenging life and work experience than so many people, but we're also so blessed in so many ways. I have to say though, dwindling parent support this year has really been a challenge. I know everyone is stressed but I am feeling a little dumbfounded by some treatment I've received. How do you deal with unsupportive parents without getting worked up? My hands are tied
