Employee drug testing, with obvious exceptions (driving, operating machinery etc), has always been an unnecessary barrier to employment and I generally see it for lower paying positions rather than more senior white collar positions. It’s another way the US keeps poor people poor. It also helps employers make liability-proof hires/fires.
That, and some employers get insurance discounts for having a “drug free workplace” but those discounts are marginal. I wouldn’t work for a place that drug tests. It’s more or less class warfare.

I agree with this. I think once someone gets to a certain point on the corporate ladder the company doesn’t care what you’re doing driving wise as long as you’re a value to the company and making them money.
I think people lower in the corporate ladder get micromanaged more heavily because there’s so much turnover.
There’s no risk of bodily injury or abuse in the legal profession. That’s typically the reason for drug testing (think construction or medical field). But also the number of people in this profession NOT on drugs is probably smaller than those who are using some sort of substance!

Do you want to eliminate half the legal workforce or what?
In NJ we do drug test teachers - and subs! I coach a high school dance team and choreograph the musicals so I have a sub certificate and I was drug tested and fingerprinted to get that cert.
Because drugs are needed to do this profession...

My in house company did drug test me when I got my offer. Healthcare industry. But yeah I don’t think they should because we don’t operate heavy machinery for gods sake
Another thought- lots of states have legalized marijuana for personal use. If a prescription isn’t required, a drug test wouldn’t be the most logical thing unless there is a practical reason to do one- like using machinery or driving
I’ve always heard “because then no one would work here”

Because it conflicts with the image firms and the profession want to project of us being white collar professionals.

Why do you want them to be drug tested?
I didn't mean to imply that.

When I was in college I interned for a bankruptcy firm and had a drug test. Since then I haven’t had to take one for any legal role. I don’t do drugs of any kind but I think it’s such an invasion of privacy and an employer should not be able to dictate what I do in my non-work time as long as it doesn’t affect my work.

we get drug tested when we get onboarded at my firm and i thought it was insane lmao

the best part is my office is in a state where weed is now legal but HQ isn’t so you have to be CLEAN clean lol
I was tested when I was hired at the DA’s office which seemed fair since we would be prosecuting people for drug offenses. Otherwise never tested for a firm.
Because the BAR’s moral character is supposed to be the ultimate test and once you clear, no one cares. They can say you’ve been vetted
Probably just autocorrect
I'm not American, but couldn't it be argued that drug testing is unconstitutional and a breach of rights. At the very least in terms of government jobs?
No, because it's rationally related to employment. You have no right to use drugs.
I'm just here for the fireworks. Lol 🍿
Personally, I don't think any employer should drug test so long as it doesn't interfere with work and/or the person doesn't appear to be inebriated while at work.
I’ve been drug tested for a temporary DOC REVIEW job🙄 My current employer also did a drug test before I started.
In house at a large foreign bank, got drug tested when I started. Have never heard of a firm doing it though.
In house at a Japanese conglomerate and got tested as pre-employment screen.
