Why don't the insurance companies just say we won't pay for your care if you get covid and could have been vaccinated?

How about we do the same for smokers, pe I ple with poor diet, those that speed when driving, involved in risky sports (i.e. skiing)....and a long list of other reasons why someone might not live 100% healthy life

In theory, it's possible, let's say if you are a new enrollee or renewing, and when you get sick, and the policy coverage you get. Some short term disability policies and other coverages consider covid a pre-existing condition.

It’s scary that you want to take away someone’s healthcare that they pay for because they don’t agree with your view. Especially when there are no long term studies to determine the effects of the vaccine yet.

So is an unplanned pregnancy, should be stop funding abortions because people are ignorant/stupid and don’t use birth control?

like

Oooh I like this idea! It's your choice not to get vaccinated, so you can pay out of your own pocket if you get sick. No free hospitals or government assistance either. My taxpayer dollars should not go to treat people who could have otherwise prevented this by being vaccinated. Also, before people come at me about other choices people can make like eating healthy to prevent diabetes or heart disease....this is literally one or two pokes in the arm that takes ZERO effort on the part of the individual. If you cant get your ass to a vaccination center once or twice for a 5 second stick in the arm for no good reason, you can pay for your own treatment if you get sick.

Should the same insurance companies say they won’t pay for your treatment for a whole host of illnesses related to being overweight (type 2 diabetes, heart attack, cholesterol meds, etc)? Or lung cancer if you’re a smoker? Etcetera. It’s frustrating the numbers who won’t get vaccinated because the variants will never go away.

Consultant 3 - I disagree. While I hope that all eligible people would get vaccinated, I am against OP’s proposition. I think it’s very dangerous to create a precedent of denying insurance coverage based on a personal decision. Your argument is that there are barriers to not becoming obese, which I agree with. I believe many anti-Vaxers face other (yet comparable) barriers and social inequities like lake of access to education, growing up in a science-hostile environment etc. I don’t want to free all anti-Vaxers from personal responsibility but there are societal reasons why some rural area have lower vaccination rates than Boston or SF

Vaccinated people are getting more and more authoritarian lately lol

The insurance companies that sometimes dont even cover your med bills?

Let’s do the same for those who smoke/fat/don’t wear seatbelts also..

like

It would make sense, in theory, but people will still flood free hospitals and doctors will still have to treat them, b/c ..you know, that whole Hippocratic Oath thing...so we'll just end up paying for their care and treatment one way or another.

If you’ve read any of my comments, I always given several examples including: illegal drug use, exercise, eating healthy, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking in addition to unplanned pregnancy. Saying I’m “obsessed” with abortion is nonsense. It’s an issue all of you like to use instead of all the other issues because: a. you think you can “win” the argument (spoiler alert, you can’t) b. It has no impact on you personally (the odds of you having issue with any of the other examples are far greater than you having an abortion) c. It makes you feel good to defend a persons right to choose. I’m incredibly Pro-Choice, I believe individuals have a right to do whatever they want and that includes make bad decisions. I will defend a persons right to choose regardless of whether or not I think their decision is “correct”. Why is this whole thread obsessed with regulating what other people to do with their own body? The minute a woman says she’s wants an abortion the whole thread cheers because it’s HER choice. The same holds true for those who don’t want to get vaccinated for WHATEVER reason they want. It’s not your job to police people or shame them.

And then people who smoked their whole lives that got cancer should pay out of pocket for their treatment and people that overate food all their lives and have heart disease should pay out of pocket for their health costs… vaccines should not be mandated. People have free choice and should not be forced to do something.

Yeah. Totally. But only if we extend it further to obese and overweight people not having theirs high blood pressure, insulin covered since they could’ve made better life choices

No one would disagree with you that losing weight can be healthy. My original point is that for insurance companies, it’s hard to have a blanket standard for what is considered unhealthy weight especially when there’s so many factors like individual fat composition and other illnesses that may cause weight gain. Where vaccinated status is a simple yes or no.

And this is why people don't trust y'all. Cuz of shit like this. Stop with your radicalism about the vaccines, it's not going to go anywhere good.

I find it sickening how some consultants in this bowl think and post and I find it abhorrent that you are advising anyone on how to operate. You really are creating a terrible name for your employers with your attitudes and outlooks in here.

because we've established already that denying coverage for preexisting conditions is bad

A lot of vaxxed people refuse to wear a mask anymore

Many people have said it here, but frankly, it’s a slippery slope. I don’t like the idea of insurance withholding coverage or care, period. Perhaps they could lower premiums for people who did get it? Or people who choose not to receive it pay a higher premium? (Like smokers, etc.) There’s not an easy answer, but I don’t think withholding care coverage is the right call.

Because the insurance company CEOs are of a certain political ideology.

They will find new ways to avoid paying like always

When people say, “the unvaccinated have blood on their hands”, what are they talking about? 1) 7-day rolling average deaths are at the lowest they’ve been since the pandemic started; 2) if anyone’s dying, it’s the unvaccinated— so why do you care? You’re yelling at the unvaccinated for killing each other?

like

I’m going to be screaming this for the rest of my life. VACCINES ARE NOT 100% EFFECTIVE ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WITH UNDERLYING ILLNESS. Vaccines, all vaccines, rely on teaching your natural immune system to recognize the virus and then be ready to fight it off should they meet the real thing. If your immune system isn’t strong to being with, due to SO many reasons, then the vaccine is less effective. That’s why herd immunity is so important. And the problem with Covid because it spreads so fast is that without HUGE vaccination rates we will never reach herd immunity or eradication. Unlike your choice to smoke or be overweight, your choice to not get vaccinated if you are still going out and about effects everyone around you, vaccinated or not.

like

They should do the same for people who need Herpes medication too

like

… obvi kidding on the pregnancy vaccine …

Not everyone that isn’t vaccinated is an anti-vaxxer. I know some people that live paycheck to paycheck and are very nervous about side effects and simply can’t afford to miss work. Of course, I want those people vaccinated, but these issues aren’t perfectly black and white. The fact that you can be bankrupted in the US for medical costs is already immoral. Don’t succumb to your basest instincts with thoughts like these. Even if people don’t want a vaccine they are still a human being worthy of care.
