I’m not personally scared for myself, even if I get it I’m healthy and in a low risk age group. I am worried about spreading it, had to explain to my 60+ year old mother that I wouldn’t be going home or visiting my 90+ year grandmother for some time

I am nervous for myself. I wasn’t a few days ago and then I read more about the virus. I am healthy but I have asthma. I have had no symptoms for over a year and am not on any meds. But as a kid I was hospitalized when I got sick because illness would affect my lungs. When I got the flu (likely swine flu) 11 years ago I was not myself for weeks and has trouble breathing for weeks. Given what I’ve seen with this virus I am terrified I will get it and require a respirator. It causes lung damage. I called my doctor to call in my inhalers I haven’t used for over a year just in case. She did when normally she would require me to come in.

No one know what will happen. We don’t know what it is, we don’t know how to treat it, we don’t know the long term effects.

Do you see what’s happening in Italy right now? That’s what people are scared of. Are you unable to comprehend that? Wtf

My main concern is the virus spreading quickly enough to overwhelm the healthcare system and medical resources we have on hand. Even if a tiny proportion of cases are severe enough to warrant a hospital stay, ventilation, special intervention, etc. a tiny fraction of a huge number is still a huge number. If that huge number hits all at once, you have a huge problem. The precautions outlined by public health agencies are intended to slow the spread of the disease, and therefore spread the severe cases over a longer period of time.

Rapidly spreading disease, with ~10% chance to be hospitalized and a 5% chance to need ICU. And a ~0.5-1% probability of death if you are not old. Oh, and your grandma has a 15% probability to die. Sucks to be her. Yup, I wonder why people are worried.

likehelpful

The inevitable overburdening of the healthcare system is a huge problem. Resources are highly constrained and we already know that there are far more cases than currently reported and diagnosed. If and when these people flood hospitals, already limited resources will be severely depleted. Doctors will be forced to choose who to treat (exactly what’s happening in Italy right now), leading to deaths among patients with other illnesses/injuries that could have otherwise been prevented. THAT is why this is such an issue. While you may recover, others will continue to infect and be infected. The US public health system just cannot such an overwhelming volume of patients.

City shuts down stores close lines for food are extremely long no public transportation. Not too worried about the virus

I’m saying if they take precautions here like they did in China or Italy or new Rochelle we will be limited in what’s available

It's spreading rapidly. Also the media honestly

Good for you and the healthy people with insurance, not true for everyone, clearly. Have to ask— Is this post a joke? Are you really unaware that older people or those with compromised immune systems have legitimate reason for concern? Seems painfully unaware perspective to kick up a thread like this.

You should also see the part where some people who do survive the virus have permanent lung damage (e.g. honeycomb-like holes). Fun virus.

As many others have said, I am not worried for me personally. I’m concerned for the elderly and immunocompromised, as well as the disastrous effects this will have on our healthcare system and it’s ability to properly serve the community if the number infected exceeds a critical point. If you got into a car accident tomorrow but all the doctors are worrying about all the sick patients with coronavirus that are dying, do you think they’re going to devote as much time to you?

Op - I think reading up on what happened to Italy and China would be a great source of information as to what can happen. I personally think it may be too late for NY- disease has already spread. Best you can do is not to add to the problem.

Why is this so hard to understand? If mortality is 1% because of the Virus that is 3.3 million people just in the US, 70 million people globally. Just in the NYC, it’s potentially up to 100000 people deaths if everyone is fully exposed. This isn’t even the number who will have to be hospitalized, even if it is 10%, it’s about 100 times what the hospitals can survive, the only way to beat this 1) flatten the curve I.e. spread the timeline so the hospitals can handle it 2) potentially eradicate it though isolation

Ok smarty mack.. no need to show off ur big stick around every time. This was a genuine question and people are still not clear with many details.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/ This is a time in our lives that we all need to start thinking about others and not just yourself. The rate at which this virus spreads is alarming and the damage it can cause is questionable. If you live in NYC, assume you have been exposed to the virus somehow and take the right precautions.

What you are missing is the possibility of you being the petri dish to give the virus a chance to mutate to something that can kill younger ppl and help spread them to other places and compromise vulnerable population.
