I know this isn’t a common sentiment on fishbowl, but I really enjoy this job. We’re working with pretty senior executives, I get to move to a different topic every 3mo, I have a clear path up a pretty rewarding career ladder - had I gone the industry route, it would have taken me ~20yrs to be in the same room as a lot of these people, and even then it’s not a guarantee I would make it that far.

EY/B/K that is a dated assumption, especially if you're in front office. I'm an F500 leader in strategy and we rocket the best /brightest up through the org with tons of visibility - comp, tuition assistance, leadership opps... It's all a matter of getting on the right list with the right sponsors. However, if we're talking about admin functions consulting is the fastest and easiest way to accelerate.
I’m good at it and it pays decently.
Happy clients. Increased levels of responsibility. Positive feedback from superiors. Promotions.
Typical ways you would measure success in any job.
Pro
Idk what I want to do with my life
No skills
Recruiting is exhausting
I have no idea
Because it’s like getting a new job over and over, having to deal with a client for 6-18 months knowing you won’t have to talk to them again Vs consistent coworkers you know you have to still deal with even if you piss each other off
I like to be abused 😅 and need a continuation of my Asian parents’ disapproval manifesting in a corporate environment.

What’s this flexibility y’all are talking about?

Yep, TA1 has got it. Helps to know the most well invested areas in your firm, navigate there and perform an essential function uniquely well, make friends with the smartest folks who see your potential and want to see you grow.
overestimate time to do work, put in your 40% of energy and coast otherwise.
Take walks. Do yoga in the middle of the day. Manicures. Lol it’s nice 😊 better bang for your buck than burning out and wayyy better boundaries
Inertia + flexibility
From product I came to consulting, after one year moving back to product.
It pays well, provides me with intellectually stimulating work, the exit opportunities get better the longer I’m in it, and I love the flexibility it provides.

too burnt out to give my job hunt the attention it deserves consistently
Because I’ve been on the same project since 2018 and it’s easy work that doesn’t get on my nerves and I get praise from the client every year

Software consulting is easy, low maintenance, and pays decently well.
I couldn’t get this pay and WLB anywhere else

Flexibility and money while I work on my dreams
What’s your dream?
I’ve been doing this almost 20 years now. When I go to clients, I learn of the inertia that the employees of the client feel through a visitor’s viewpoint. I can change clients often and change the entire culture I experience in doing so. I can change the type of work that I am doing and not stay stuck in a role like many of my clients have seemed to be. Those employees at the clients seem stagnant at times, and I am just happier with the possibility of change.
