Why is it that all the professions that people really enjoy the most (i.e. musician, artist, dancer, athlete, writer, teacher, etc) all either pay very poorly or are almost impossible to make a career

I would say, on average, they all pay poorly. My initial thinking is that it's mostly supply and demand. If many people want to do it, then there's no need to pay all that much.

The supply of people willing to do it is further exacerbated by the fantasy of becoming one of those hugely positive outliers.

Art music sport are (outside of the obvious) hobbies. Not jobs. Jobs are things that need to get done to advance some enterprise. There are some creative jobs (eg advertising, or painting a mural, or assembling the music for a tv show) but they are rare Also / must ordinary jobs don’t pay well either. Consulting and investment banking are the NBA and NFL of normal “jobs”

like

Atk2 that's selection bias - you're only looking at the most successful sliver of the population of people who embarked on the journey to become top level athletes.

D4 - That is precisely why it has more impact and why banking/consulting attracts the elite. And by the way things looks, it appears the majority of the world would agree with me. But hey, you’re entitled to your own opinion.

Ask yourself if were paid in canvases or allowed to attend really cool art shows instead of a getting compensated in cash (a medium that allows you to buy whatever you wanted), would you still be in consulting?

likefunny

Have met so many people who ‘sold out’ on one of these to become consultant/bankers. Wondering why there’s such a misalignment between what the market values vs what gives most people satisfaction at work

Low 👏 Barrier 👏 To 👏 Entry 👏

Because you’re not really making that big of an impact... successful consultants save businesses tons of money and get paid well for it, bankers make their clients tons of money and also get paid well for it, Doctors save lives, etc.

What’s an artist going to do? Make you feel good about a painting? I’m sure top level folks in the field (movie producers, directors, etc) make a killing, but your average joe artist is worthless because they aren’t able to make a large enough impact through the work that they do.

Now teachers on the other hand, I would agree should definitely get paid more since they are helping build the foundation for the next generation who may become something great.

But the reason they don’t is probably because these jobs aren’t that difficult to attain. See low barrier to entry or supply & demand.

like

The lack of appreciation for culture in this thread is appalling. Saving banks money doesn’t have more impact than creating art just because there’s a quantitative value attached.

like

Wrong: Football(not soccer), basketball and other sport stars are highly overpaid and enjoy their jobs.

I get a lot of satisfaction from consulting, OP

ATK2, that’s still supply and demand. There’s a very small supply of Lebron/Trout/Brady level talent, and as such, they’re in high demand and highly compensated. There’s a low demand for AA-level 3rd basemen, so they’re paid like shit. Same thing with artists, though their “talent” is more subjective, it’s certainly whatever the market will support.

Supply, meet demand. So-called "passion industries" are the same way

Because the workers don’t own the means of production, obviously

Economic Value added ?

D1 In 500 years, what will be in the museums: art or anecdotes about saving banks money? We all have to make a living, but you’re uncultured if you don’t value any of the arts.

In 08-09, layoffs were understood, but this time, it's different. A company that enacts layoffs now is basically commuting a death sentence to employees, thus becoming the executioner.
