Why is it that every time I try to take time off EVERY TEAM pops out of the woodwork for something to do before I leave? Even the quiet teams. It’s Monday and I’ve already logged 20 hours for the week.

Are you me? It’s absolutely wild how this happens every time.

Bc they are trying to cover their ass and don’t want to do that work themselves after you leave….

like

Probably, but also some of these teams are huge. There are multiple mostly competent midlevels that can handle.

Pro tip- tell people you’re going to be out a day before you actually are. That way the dump comes on your 2nd to last day, and on your last day no one knows you’re there so you can quietly knock out those fires sent your way.

like

This is genius.

“Oh, yeah I was supposed to take off Thursday, but my traveling companion had a work emergency come up, and there’s just a ton to do here, that we pushed it back a day.” Look like a team player, free goodwill, and you can cut out early on your actual last day. I don’t do it every time, but anything longer than a 3 day weekend

How would you rate your ratios for work, play, and rest?

My life's mostly been 85% work/serious stuff (includes academia), 10% rest, and 5% play.

I've only started to learn to rest more this year and learning to accept lower productivity (was part of the hustle culture).

Q: How do I learn the concept of play? Didn't have that in my childhood growing up. All serious, no fun. Has anyone transitioned successfully?

I feel like a boring, old lady 😔😒

What is your definition of play?

How would you approach moving back into industry after a long career break?

A successful senior software engineering career (15 years+), I took a significant amount of time out due to burnout and caring responsibilities.

Seven years on, my situation has improved, and the industry has progressed. Remote first companies are numerous, and I’m keen to move back into software development.

I would love to hear a recruiter's perspective on this situation.

How does the holiday weekend impact your quota? Still the same? It's still the same for me, which I feel is unfair.

Hey guys… I’m a case worker in child safety and I’m someone who loves being outdoors/dies at a desk all day. I’m hoping to organise that at least once a week I can go to a cafe and catch up on all my case notes that need to go into the system.
So far the only reason I’ve been told no is that “if you do then everyone will want to and then no one will be in the office” … how can I convince them that I work better out of the office and get this freedom & mental break for myself?

Is it unethical as realtors working in an office to block chunks of time off for personal reasons? Some of my coworkers stay in their desks for up to 10 hours, but I've taken up the habit of blocking at least 1 hour daily for lunch, breaks, and other issues that may arise. Do you do this as well or do you prefer to work straight through your day?

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send.
