Why is it that some reviewers - seniors and managers - provide negative feedback? Do they honestly believe that approach works? Telling someone that they did something wrong doesn't help either person

I just don't understand why people need so much coddling. But then again I am old school so I prefer they "hey.. you fucked this up, fix it". Like no big deal. People are too sensitive these days.

like

Also, people tend to be surprised when they don't get amazing reviews for lackluster work if you're always stroking their egos and trying to make them feel better. Accounting is binary so it's either right or wrong.

Geez... why does everyone need their hands held? This is not kindergarten. I am not saying be mean, but Why is it so bad to say, hey, you fucked up here you need to fix it to avoid it the next time. I feel that being straight forward (not mean) and being honest with the person and willing to help them is the best route.

Constructive feedback is important. It is best not to outright criticize people, but if you need to improve you need to know.

like

This is what happens when the generation that grew up with participation trophies reaches the workplace.

like

Cont... If you want someone to do something right then why not sit with that person and go over developmental points rather than just say "this and that is wrong." I just don't understand. I personally always provide positive feedback. Build a relationship with my team members and not become one of those people that others dread working with. If you do have that style/approach of providing feedback, then please enlighten me on how that has worked out for you.

like

I'll never give a negative review, unless it's for someone I truly believe shouldn't be at the firm (2 performers) . Don't get me wrong though, feedback should always be given, positive and constructive. Just I'll never formalize negative feedback. And if someone fucks up, tell em to their face and don't be an ass about it.

The higher you get in PA the more you need reliable people under you. Even an average performer can be relied on for average work. Though, if an average performer hates you because you're an insufferable asshole and believe people "are just too sensitive" you'll get below average work. It's not hard to tell people they fucked up without making them feel bad.

Bottom line is, you want your people's best work. You get that by culturing loyalty, and not by being an obnoxious know it all stick up your ass machiavellian overlord.

The work is stressful enough without everyone being assholes to each other. Jeez.

like

Constructive yes. But constructive does not mean hand holding or coddling. This is simple. You have a task, accomplish it. If you have a problem try to figure it out. If you have tried your best to figure it out and can't, ask for help. But please stop whinning about hiw mean someone is because they pointed out that something you did is wrong, and stop relying on MY knowledge to do YOUR work. I understand the things that i do because i worked on it. Nothing was given to me. These days people want stuff handed to them on platters. FUCK THAT!!DO THE FUCKING WORK! You would be surprised how much you learn and then become the "go to" person when you out some effort into actually learning and figuring things out on your own. NOTHING in life is handed to you. If you want something, you work to achieve it. (Unless you are a trust fund baby)

like

I prefer negative but constructive feedback. Saying "you did this wrong" is negative but not constructive. Saying "you did this wrong but here's how to fix/prevent it" is helpful. Acting like everything's great when it's not just to be friendly/nice is just leading to failure!

like

Normal People don't go around destroying other human beings. Period. And you know in yourself whether you are being an asshole when giving your feedback. You know whether you are getting a rise out being an asshole when giving your feedback. No amount of justification can cover those facts. Just don't be a dick. Simple as that.

like

Lol! Found the asshole

like

Ya, because broad generalizations are never a bad thing...

like

Saying "this is wrong" isn't negative...?? saying "you're an idiot and you can't do anything right" is negative and unproductive. Pointing out mistakes in your work product is part of PA life and you should get over it.

like

Negative formal personnel reviews are not a good idea in my opinion either :)

like

Want to mention, I wasn't mean. Just said you need to do this or that. Or I told you about this and you still didn't do it...

like

People tend to miss the point and the severity of the mistakes if you're holding their damn hand. It's not my job to protect your ego or waste my time. I'm known for being blunt and no one has a problem with it.

like

I agree with everything ey1 said. Yes we need to coach, but people need real feedback.

like

I am in that generation, so I can talk sh@t

like

The constructive criticism should actually be constructive though. Give them a goal or a plan or a tip for improving in the area they screwed up in. Just saying they messed it up is not constructive.

like

Great responses so far! At least we can all agree on one thing: Be willing to help so that they don't mess up again. That's exactly my point!

Hi All. My H1B with my current employer is valid till Aug 2022 and they are filing for an extension later this month. However, i just accepted an offer from another firm and they will be filing for the H1B transfer later this month as well. My question is, would it be possible for the new firm to file for my transfer + extension in one shot? Also, this is the end of my 6 year H1B cycle and my I140 with current employer is valid with a priority date of May 2019.

Any tips to make sure I get what I deserve.
