Why is New York cool? I know there's haters too but generally NYC is seen as a cool place to live or travel. Why is that? Lots of cities are big, old, have great food, music and art, what makes NYC special or different?

I would say all cities a have food yes, but not all cities you could go to a different restaurant every day for your entire life and not hit the same one twice, statistically. Let’s add an unlimited list of activities to that also. Also these things are all condensed in a much smaller area then most cities making it more fun per square inch. Also, most cities shut down at a certain point. “Bars close at 1, get out!”. NYC is a 24 hour world. You can literally stay out from Saturday night through Thursday if you have the heart for it. It can match whatever pace of human being you are. There’s also the old “there’s something for everyone”, but yea, a lot of cities can boast that. In NYC though I feel like it’s more of “there is a vast and wide community for literally everyone with every specific interest” because there is. It’s the most culturally diverse city on the planet (by data, not opinion), which makes it a true melting pot of shared experience. Also just has a range of geographical options that not every city can compete with. Within an hour of skiing, beaches, hiking. And best of all, it’s always changing.

The world comes to NY. Some of the interesting places in the world I've been to tend to be the most crowded like HK, Tokyo, NY, or isolated and less populated like Iceland. The ones that are liveable and "nice" are inoffensively bland. Berlin being the exception but I'm sure "liveable" depends on socioeconomic status. Despite its energy, excitement, culture, and offerings, NY is not an easy city to live in when you have 8.4 million population. So there really is a bit of Stockholm Syndrome when you survive adjusting to the city and embrace it. Personally having lived here, once NY gets into you, it stays with you like an STD. NY is polarizing. Not many places are. Because not many places are as uniquely special and painful as NY. It informs your world view, your attitude, your expectations, and your interactionns. You'll hear NYers bitch and complain about the city, people are very real about the pros and cons of living here. But the moment an outsider questions or attacks NY, they regret it. Experiencing NY is like peeling back the onion layers. I can walk with native NYers who marvel WITH me because it's new to them too. Very much like exploring HK and Tokyo. Ever changing cities. But the city will co op the new and make it New York or it'll disappear because it didn't belong. And finally, everyone makes NY their own. Anyone can become a NYer. Not everyone can become a Bostonian or SFian (tried).

Go to New York and then go to other cities. There’s a difference.

Nah, that’s not it.

Youre right OP, there are lots of cities with great food, music and art. But New York has the best food, the best music and the best art. It’s got the best (and worst) of everything all in one place. To me thats what makes it a great city. And the energy of the place is unmatched. Take a walk in Dallas at 1am on a Tuesday. Or DC. Or most neighborhoods in Chicago, it’s totally dead. New York? It might as well be saturday night.

likefunnysmart

It’s true. I’ve lived in Dallas and DC. It’s true.

New York city is overrated

It is. I live in nyc rn and I've found places like LA, Oakland and Atlanta to be amazing cities in their own way.

Honestly, unless you’ve lived in more than one borough in New York, you may not even be qualified to make an assessment. There is *so much* in NY you can’t possibly have a clear view of it without living there and you certainly can’t have a clear view of it if you limit yourself to a single borough (as many people do). I lived in Harlem, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. I’m not gonna lie, I could not wait to leave NYC. 😂 It’s a hard city to live in. Everything is difficult unless you’re rich. But, once I left, I realized there was so much I was able to take for granted because I lived in NY. Culture, variety, diversity, entertainment, food, access to resources, the list goes on and on and on. And, although there are other cities that can check all those boxes, they can’t even begin to compete when it comes to the *depth and scale* of each of those things I listed. There’s no place like it. It’s the most global city in our nation and, if I’m not mistaken, on the planet. That does something to a city. But I still… don’t want to live there again unless I win the lottery. I do love to visit, though.

The opportunities, the density, and the mixture of people from all over the world makes for a unique culture where diverse, ambitious people are rubbing shoulders with each other and naturally inspire each other.

In terms of US cities, the biggest cool-factor and benefit to me for NYC is the diversity. No other US city comes close to the range of different people who live here.

like

Senior Copywriter 1, you’d be totally right if agency diversity was the topic. But the topic is about the cities themselves.

I think nyc is cool. I love it. But I’ve never felt the need to defend it or sell it to someone clearly not into it. If it’s not cool to you, it’s not for you. Find some other place you love.

Tokyo is the only city that compares to NYC. And it has far better food. Hong Kong was up there before recent events.

I've lived in Chicago, Cincinnati, Seattle, LA, Boston, and NYC. Chicago and LA are close, but really miss on the food and culture. The others were nice or fine, Seattle being a blast, but they don't feel nearly like comparable cities

AD1: Star of Siam just north of the Loop, Spoon on the north side, S&S Thai on the northwest side are good places to start.

Because rent is most expensive than black market organs and the entire city smells like rotting garbage, duh

San Francisco vs New York stats are misleading because San Francisco, Oakland, Daly City, Sausalito etc are separate incorporated cities with separate statistics, whereas New York’s five boroughs are all lumped together. It’s more accurate to compare just San Francisco to just Manhattan. Or just Oakland to just Brooklyn. The New York counterparts were always more expensive.

Currently stepped out of nyc for a minute to take a breather. I think it’s obvious that nyc has an energy like no other. For me it’s not cooler but as you can see from the majority of responses it’s just different and preferable to some.
