Why is there a push to raise the Federal minimum wage? Why not leave this to each state?

For the same reason that we passed the civil rights act: there are a bunch of backward states out there (my state among them)

Omg. Ok. You really are new here. States rights vs federal rights... goes back to the very beginning. Don’t have time for full-on history lesson, so here’s the quick and dirty: - colonists wanted freedom to decide their lives free of tyranny from Britain and were totally fine to do it at the state level - a country divided - they banded together to fight big bad king George - a country united - states rights were used as an argument to protect rights of the south to have slaves - divided - civil war where the north (and federal govt) had to put some sense into the south and be on the right side of history - re-united - segregation/people being identified as less-than in the eyes of the state govts - divided - civil rights as noted above - united The above points talk about the abuse of power, working class, and labor class if only the states could chose how to live. State’s rights are good in certain topics, but when it comes to the point of protecting ALL Americans, federal gov’t has to step in for certain states

like

Because half the states wouldn’t enact it or be able to afford it and minimum wage is federal in order to protect workers from business doing shady things at a local level.

Both

This "leave it to the states" thing may have worked out if Republicans didn't dismantle organize labor over the past 40 years. Now there are swaths of Americans unable to negotiate for their wages.

like

Unions played a huge part in mismanaging it all to hell, tbh.

Also because the minimum wage has only risen $4.25 in the last 40 years and hasn’t risen at all in the last 11.

like

OP is right guys. The economy is going to crash when the $1 menu becomes the $1.15 menu.....

That’s already happening - I disagree with this premise of fear around if you increase minimum Wage businesses will use automation and raise prices. Seattle is already increasing minimum wage. There was short term pain, but a higher QOL and a quick readjustment for businesses. If businesses want to maintain their profits and raise prices, other businesses will see the opening and hold - volume play. It shifts the competitive landscape

Because ppl lack common sense, that’s why

like

If two thirds of Americans agree on raising the minimum wage to $15, then being for it represents the “common sense” view and being against it is the point of view lacking in “common sense”

like

It is left to the states as long as it is above the federal minimum

like

What law should we pass after all the businesses replace the minimum wage workers with robots that cost less than $15/hr? UBI?

It seems to me that the Fed has the (imperfect, time lagged) ability to manage unemployment and inflation through interest rates. If that’s the case as as the last ~40+ years suggest, then anyone who becomes unemployed by raising the minimum wage will become employed in another job — eventually. So I think the answer to your question is how do we provide for the transition from one job to another through training, unemployment assistance, etc. But your question assumes minimum wage hikes cause large amounts of job losses, but I don’t believe economic research bears that out. But the above is my suggestion just in case.

Had an offer for 30% more , a promotion to manager, extra week of vacation to switch firms. I love where I am at with my clients and there is a lot of potential there. Should I stay the course?

Have you ever accepted an offer somewhere, and then a week later your current agency countered with a promotion and a higher salary than the other offer? I want to take the counter from my current place, but I don’t want to soil my reputation for revoking my acceptance. They are trying hard to retain me. Also, will I have a target on my back if I stay and they knew I was going to leave? I am also just grateful to have options and want to acknowledge that.
