Why is there such an emphasis on chargability? I understand we should be trying to work on client billable work as much as we can, but it also disincentivizes finding diverse experiences and projects.

For a professional services firm chargeability is probably one of the most important metrics that can be used to trace revenue (and some aspect of gross profit ) from a per employee level. This also helps us with assessing affordability for talent. Every professional services company that I’ve worked at or engaged with tracks some form of utilization metrics. Some may chose to give it a different name but ultimately when you unpack the metric it’s “are you making money for the money?”

Deloitte measures utilization, not chargeability. Not sure if BD factors into utilization, but anyone taking PTO has that counted against them when calculating utilization.

As A1 said, likely better than I will, tt is what we are. You know when you are rolling, you should be looking for diverse projects when roll-off is coming. I know, harsh, but the way we make money is by charging for people’s expertise, often on a time basis.

For those of you with ADHD, do you have any tips for managing workload and inboxes? I didn’t take meds for a few years due to pregnancy, etc. but I started again recently. In addition to managing tasks and structuring, I get distracted when responding to emails and have trouble getting back to my actual billable work.

Unpopular opinion: 2,000 hours is way too high of a benchmark to be eligible for a bonus. Unless like 300+ non-billable hours count towards it (maybe half of that be pro bono hours and the other half be diversity, recruiting, etc), 2000 is way too much.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
