Just a guess but they have kept their numbers generally low for the whole time now pandemic fatigue is kicking in and vaccines haven’t compensated yet so they have a large population with no natural or vaccine antibodies all suddenly dropping their guard
Because Michigan is filled with first, second and third generation descendants of hardcore, poor, mean white Southerners who brought their Muh Freedom, F Everyone Else politics and outlook on life up with them, and insist the pandemic is an invention of “The Dumbocrats” to keep them “down.” So no one is wearing masks and they’re mercilessly making fun of anyone who does.
That may just be my extended family members and community statewide, though.
45 percent jump in hospitalizations for COVID in the last week, about a dozen hospitals statewide at capacity. The patients are getting younger and thankfully don’t require ventilators or ICU visits as much as months ago, which is in part due to so many people over the age of 65 getting the vaccine and keeping them out of the hospital. But that doesn’t mean there are nurses or doctors galore to tend to them.
What outsiders aren’t understanding is how poor the hospital systems are, and how thin the staff are, statewide outside of a few large cities. You can disbelieve COVID and faces masks all you want, but the magic Wishful Thinking Fairy can’t summon additional medical staff out of thin air when grandma falls down the steps and bashes her head in and you have the choice of a 5 hour wait or a 2 hour drive (plus another 3 hour wait) to get help.

Because the focus on flattening the curve was the wrong strategy to begin with. We should have pushed for herd immunity earlier and focused on therapeutics instead of vaccines.
Oh boy, PwC4. Do you know how peer review works in the scientific community?
If ya don’t, I’ll make it real simple: If a scientist claims something based on the results of their experiment, other scientists try to replicate the experiment to see if they get the same results. If they do, they reach a consensus and decide that it holds up, at least within the confines of the experiment.
It’s okay that you didn’t pay attention in 8th grade, but it’s not okay to pretend that you did and spread garbage takes

Youth sports.
Seriously.
Case rates among people younger than 18 are up ~250%.
Are any of those states located in locations where because temperatures routinely plunge to below freezing, the sports arenas and high school gymnasiums (coincidentally filled with screaming anti-mask activists cheering on their kids) and locker rooms and classrooms themselves are poorly ventilated and sealed so tight they function like virtual hot boxes?
We (Michigan) were locked down longer than any other state. People are now officially over it just in time for the B.1.1.7. variant to run through the whole population. College towns are open and crowded. Drove past 15+ houses with 40+ college kids in the front yards last weekend with no masks. Things are not changing here, so I guess we just wait for heard immunity through infection rather than vaccines...
Not among college kids. Get the obese and old folks vaccinated
Michigan is home to many very large highly populated universities and colleges. It’s no surprise to see this spike just after spring break.
Well if they lived in a bubble no one would care, but they don’t.

More restrictions do not necessarily result in fewer cases and deaths. Those states should do what Florida and Texas did and remove their restrictions and mask mandates
Virus gonna virus.
You all arguing about policy differences are drinking the same kool-aid.
A moratorium on mass gatherings and an international travel ban were the only nobrainer public policy actions and they weren't enforced.
Most other "lockdown" actions have lead to more harm (including more general long term death and suffering), and some (like Cuomo's nursing home actions) very directly and attributably to death immediate covid deathcount.
^yes came to say youth sports. Kids get it and bring it home.
That’s what the nurse at the vaccination center told my mom as well.
And because certain groups were pushing the mantra that it doesn’t affect the young (so all we need to do is quarantine the elderly). So that sentiment is pretty well ingrained, but these new variants are more dangerous for all age groups.
Vaccines have not kicked in. Israel had a similar graph and once the vaccines started kicking in, the numbers were smashed down.
I live in Minnesota. Most of our restrictions were lifted in early March yet vaccine eligibility to the general public didn’t open till the end of March and it’s still hard for most to find an appointment. Hence the surge.
Also we have harsh winters so the slightest hint at early great weather and people want to gather. Also could be a contributing factor.

Those states love to travel for FL for spring break 🤣🤣🤣🤣 (I have no idea of this is correct, but feel right)
People be kissing in Michigan
Why is what?
From looking at the graph, I would guess why Michigan in particular is seeing such a resurgence in cases in comparison to other states.

Variants? I don’t know enough about covid actually so don’t listen to me
Minor league wrestling matches
U.K. variant started surging there before vaccinations were widespread enough
Can we can look to israel as a "real life study" of vaccines smashing variants?
