Pretty sure Russia having 100,000 troops right at Ukraine’s border ready to invade at a moment’s notice is what’s causing the tension. The US is giving daily announcements that Russia is about to invade because it causes Russia to claim otherwise, which causes them to create new plans and keeps them on their backfeet

We knew that Russia was going to invade Crimea in 2014, but we stayed quiet. Then when Putin invaded, it was a shock to the global community.

Thanks for insightful answers, what I wanted to know was why was US all over the place in saying Russia will attack any moment now with such confidence. It feels like if the war actually happens then US stands to benefit the most because EU will most certainly put sanctions on Russia and will then be dependent on US for natural gas. And hence US would like the war to happen.
In general the sentiment in EU is that Russia is putting pressure on Ukraine to not join NATO but will not go to war.
Anyway, let’s hope that the war doesn’t happen specially now since Russia has pulled back troops or atleast announced that they have pulled back troops.
