Ya living your entire life for an exit opp is the way to go

@PEA1, no doubt, it's not a linear, clear-cut route out of IBing post MBA. You're much more likely to score the job if you do your two years as an analyst. My original comment was to say that OP's exit opps are superior relative to whatever they were doing prior to working in the IB. Most MBA associates I know we're in another industry, private banking etc., and needed to hit the reset button to get better long-term opportunities. A close friend of mine went to a top ten school after being in bond sales, got his MBA and is in his second year in TMT coverage. He has been contacted by a number of reputable VC firm HHers, and will likely jump ship this next year. Again, not the preferred route, but bond sales to venture associate is a pretty good example of how it can work.

like

What exit opps? PE? Not really, that's almost nonexistent for post MBA banking associates. HF? Maybe, but you might as well have gone from MBA directly. Into industry is the only one I see that makes sense, and that could have been accomplished post MBA without the painful pit stop in banking. Please elaborate if you feel differently.

like

I think every situation is different. But people coming in to the industry after a few years in another industry still have a chance in PE/HFs, especially if you come from a good school. You're obviously in PE, so you know more than I do about recruiting, but I've seen guys come from atypical backgrounds and land in a great role in PE.

like

I hope you're not extrapolating your life as an associate 20 years into the future... presumably you joined IB post-MBA to make MD, and life as MD isn't bad at all

like

And the exit op for a MD is a CFO!

like

@BAML1 You're right that every situation is different. I'll concede that sometimes things like this happen. I mean the general trends though. It would be unwise for someone to come into banking post MBA and expect to have exit opps aplenty, as that's simply not true. For PE junior associate roles, most funds are a 2 year model even if they claim partner track from day one... they expect churn. Post MBA they truly do assume everyone is there for the long haul and it's largely the case, at most funds people stay for 5+ years at that point. So unless a fund is just starting, upsizing their fund commitments, or had someone leave, they are unlikely to need additional support at the post MBA level. The stars really do have to align. Also, at that point they can draw from the pool of people with direct PE experience so anyone going to a fund from banking has to be a total superstar. I've only seen it happen once and that was an associate who basically led a sellside for a fund so they poached him because they knew first hand he crushed it.

Hi everyone! I’ve been thinking for years now if I should pursue an MBA program? I’ve heard from many that for some it was helpful and they needed it to get promoted. Others say that currently it can be seen as a waste of money if you don’t need it to be promoted for example. I’m asking because I’ve always wanted to strive to reach the highest level of education I can and I do like to learn but an MBA is an investment and I don’t know if it’s worth it.

Leave for another consulting firm even tho I’m up for promotion in a few months at my current firm? Pros of leaving are better work life balance, not stuck in one industry, minimal travel. Cons are comp - I’d be making slightly less base than what I would after promo (tho higher then right now) and significantly less bonus
