I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I quite like doing work that everyone sees and maybe even changes culture.
Yup. But I had to work hard to get here.
Ad Creatives now believe their own lies too often. That their big ideas are revolutionary. That winning a Lion makes them a genius. That few humans can do what they can do. That they are exceptionally talented. If they left the industry they would have to face that these are lies perpetuated by an industry that celebrates lying as an art form. Outside of the industry most ad CDs are nothing special and certainly not untouchable geniuses who are allowed to waste client budgets and abuse coworkers. The end of this outdated “lone genius” hubris can’t come soon enough. Its also entertaining to watch them try to survive outside of the industry on big ideas. Especially if they thought learning to design and make digital things was below them.
EP1, you have a gigantic chip on your shoulder. We get it. Chill out.
Also why are you posting here? Miss us? 😘
Trying to rescue you
I actually love my job? I couldnt think of anything worse than spending my life doing UX
I like being an art director. I don’t want to be a designer. So I stick with advertising.
Honestly, I do like the job and I do think it can create impact. You don’t need people to start a riot to provoke change. Maybe is enough with having 100 people sending an SMS in 2019 to donate money. Maybe it’s something bigger, maybe smaller. And getting a salary out of having ideas? Out of making people smile, laugh, think? For me that’s an amazing job.
And honestly, if you don’t like it, you should leave it. The main problem of this industry is that it’s filled with people that don’t like it, don’t trust it and don’t believe in it. Thus, the work is worst. And it creates the unhealthy environment that I see every time I open this app.

Cont. When I left everyone was miserable. No one like their jobs. Looking back, the ad World was so insular and petty. Personally, I’d run screaming the other way if an agency wanted to hire me.
Sure
It feels like the roles are merging now. Designers are expected to be “big thinkers” and ADs are expected to have a strong technical skill set. I think that’s why the role “creative designer “ is around now.
Some of the best people I’ve worked with have the both skills: designer and art director. They’re closely tied together. The worst campaign from our agency was done by a solely art director who constantly brags.
How did you make that transition? I always thought I’d have to go to school to switch
I worked as an interactive art director and managed to work on enough very intensive ecommerce sites and such doing their UX that I had a good enough portfolio that I tailored toward UX/UI. Just pivoted a bit.
I guess I lucked out. Making $140,000k a year for 40 hour weeks plus I get to work from home half the time.
I worked brand side and didn’t enjoy it. Quickly left and feel much more fulfilled in my agency role. Days crawled by in monotony, the company was scared of making any major decision, and work was stagnant. And I still had calls at 7 in the morning and 10 at night. The difference was now I could take them from home and come in late/leave early... how exciting!
Advertising isn’t for everyone and brand side isn’t for everyone. Many people enjoy the challenge of the ad industry. After many years of dreaming about going brand side, I’ve realized I’m more fit for advertising.
Planning my escape now ....
I just recently got out and it’s amazing . Work life balance is a real thing .
What did you switch to?
I've been trying to get out for years!
What’s keeping you, out of curiosity ?
