Isn’t it bad that it would encourage people to not take PTO in order to boost utilization ?
^ lol
It absolutely does matter, since it provides a disincentive around taking PTO
It matters if you’re a work animal or enjoy your time off. Distinguish the slaves from the humans 😂
Doesn't matter if it's the same math for everyone.
Utilization % is not the real metric. It is billable hours and you need to hit a set amount. If you want to take them out of the denominator then go ahead. Your target will be 85% with them in and 90% with them out...will be the same hours either way.
B e c a u s e. It. Doesn’t. Matter.
Everyone is rated using the same metrics
Tying utilization to ratings is important since that’s kind of how the consulting revenue model works. Under utilized = firm makes less money; therefore, so do you
D7, but there are plenty of consulting firms that don't count PTO against you when it comes to utilization (or billable hours target, however you want to measure it)
This is incorrect..I just went through the new hire training and it explicitly covered this topic..PTO and holidays do not count toward utilization
Because the metric has a meaning and you not wanting to count PTO doesn’t make it utilization until we can convince a client to pay for those hours. It is how consultancies measure their health
As someone who’s been in the room, 10% points below lower of class average or target results in strong talks about what your issue is. Anything 10% higher than the higher of the two numbers and they ask why your working so hard (no extra credit). So it really isn’t that important when you realize that total annual hours is the metric that sets your target.
Sc1, did you fall for the lie of the company caring about its employees?
SaC1, thankfully some companies do indeed care about their employees
M1- nope.
Functionally similar, but it influences how people take their PTO and the firm knows it.
People take PTO and try to make up for those PTO hours in other times due to the utilization rate. And there is a distinction between billable utilization and non billable. It just encourages people to work more... when they are no in their PTO
SG1: I used to work for KPMG..and KPMG does not factor PTO in the denominator. But I can tell you every single time I tried to take PTO there was always an emergency proposal help..urgent client need..and as a result my PML would say "it is not in the best interest you take PTO"..which is bull shit.
