Why would anybody ever leave Federal consulting? Came from the private sector and it’s been leagues better for the past year.

Generally the pay is worse. The clients usually have more incompetence. And the work is not as interesting and challenging. A lot of staff aug type works. A lot more variety on the private side. I went Private-Fed-Private. Hated my short fed stint

like

This is a serious question? Commercial consulting pays more, the projects are more dynamics, clients are not using 5+ year old systems mostly, and it takes 1/2 the time to do things in commercial. Also if you like to travel, we travel all the time

like

I think OP’s question is valid. I’ve noticed that perspectives fall in one of two buckets: those who prefer the ability to be 100% local and have better hours vs those who want higher pay and faster turnarounds/more stress

like

Yeah, true. I will say if you’re wanting a local project and have a family, Fed is not a bad option. Too slow for me. But priorities change when one starts having a family

like

I travel a couple times a quarter to a client destination that I like. I switched from commercial group here so my pay is the same. I work 40 hours per my contract. The work is interesting and challenging and has a 5 year timeline with diverse SOW.

The only thing I miss are expenses, but that said the 20% (generous) extra indirect pay from those is not worth the additional 20 hours a week and inconvenience of being away from my established life.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I think you have to make sure in fed you're on something interesting. I'm in fed and have super interesting projects. My ex boyfriend was in PWCs public sector and did staff aug (although now he does EY PMO so can't say that's any better lol)

likefunny

Yep. Or you know, if you’ve done one too many PE DDs in commercial and want a break badly...

like

Fed is horrible. I can’t wait to gtfoh. The incompetence is ridiculous. Even on the Accenture side, not just the client. Def lower standards

like

I left federal to go to commercial. I don't mind hard work, something I was not putting in while federal. Sure, awesome hours, but the govt gets nothing done and therefore never had anything for us to do. It was awful

like

I spent 4.5 years in federal at another firm before moving to commercial FYi

I’ll happily give you my fed client

I’m assuming OP is being sarcastic

^ yeah, the cool projects at D Fed are SO cool and interesting. I’ve got a bunch of friends there who feel the same way as you (though they started there, rather than in commercial). One q - I thought pay was dictated by the group you’re currently in, not where you started?

I thought so too, I am in the federal equivalent of my private sector skillset and have yet to see my wages get garnished though. Same city and title, etc.

5 YEAR timeline? 🤢

Yeah KPMG1, it’s on the longer end of even federal contracts.

Had a few job offers on the table from CPG and Tech (non-FAANG) companies for Senior Analyst type roles.
