Wieden Privilege: Being able to get certain ideas made purely because it came from W+K. If you took the exact same idea and tried to sell it to the exact same client through any other agency, it would never get made or even entertained.

A lot of creatives think only the idea matters, and of course, idea is huge. But execution is the other 90%. Often, the ideas that seem lackluster are presented with insane attention and thought to execution. Then, the perfect partner is brought on board to actually execute. Like when they worked with studio ghibli to make Oregon’s tourism campaign. It wasn’t, we’ll do something like that. It was, we’ll actually hire ghibli to bring these surreal vignettes to life. Execution and having artists and producers who know how to execute is the key.

like

I’d argue that the idea was really good too: ‘Only slightly exaggerated.’ That’s a great thought. (Not my campaign, promise)

This is great agency brand at play. Wieden managed to build agency brand that brands trust to make creative work and get them out of ‘same same’. Isn’t it what we tell all our clients? Once you have a strong brand it gets easier to sell [ideas].

More like 'competent account management privilege.'

likeuplifting

I can assure you the account teams are not “bullied” at Wieden. They are firmly on the same team and the same page and that’s how great work gets made.

like

It's not because the agency's name is W+K. It's because the entire agency is geared toward selling that work. Believe me, lots of great ideas die at the clients' hands at WK, too. But they give up less, compromise less, and take more risks. Source: Worked there

likefunny

This happened with kfc. FCB suggested the colonel, kfc said no. Wieden gets the account, brings back the colonel.

like

It comes down to trust and creative bravery. Clients go to W+K for work that scares them and pushes the envelope, because they’ve got a reputation and an approach that heroes the work and puts creativity at the center. As a client, you know they’re in it for the work and can trust that the work is their priority. They’ve dumped clients before, over a lack of creative appetite/bravery! And meanwhile, I’ve worked at FCB, as well as WPP + Publicis agencies...when you’re at a big-ass holding company, as much as they want to say creativity is at the heart of everything, it’s $. Sure, you maybe can sell in a great idea there, but the chances of it getting chipped away by clients and internal processes are HIGH. this isn’t shitting on any of the big guys, I’m happily at one right now, but clients just don’t seem to have as much respect for big agency teams—to them, we’re vendors. But they see W+K as creative and cultural consultants. IMO, they’ve earned their rep for excellence.

like

This is true in all parts of life - reputation/perception matters. If my mother and in laws gave me the same exact parenting advice I’d probably be more receptive to it coming from my mother.

like

^This person gets it. Happens when my significant other gives me advice and I’m unsure about it...But then my friends give me the exact same advice and I think they’re so wise.

like

Lol privilege. They earned it

like

Ok wk stan. I see you!

Sure, but how do you think they got to this point?

like

Took me 7 years to get in here. I’d say most of us earned this so-called ‘privilege’ of being here. But the word ‘privilege’ doesn’t sit right with me...I guess that was your point? To ruffle our feathers? ‘Privilege’ suggests we didn’t earn the right to be here. But I think everyone I know at w+k earned that right, through either talent or hard work.

like

You’ve definitely got a legitimate point and I think you’re right, everyone I know who works at WK worked their asses off. The bigger problem/jealousy a lot of us have, is there’s really talented folks and agencies in this industry who have the potential to do that same kind of work, but clients seem to see them as not worthy or take them less seriously, and you guys are more likely to have one spots produced because of your reputation and extremely talented creatives. Everyone knows you’ll deliver something spectacular every time. So I’d be careful about calling it a privilege on WKs part, but more a bias clients can have

like

Clients will seek out Wieden, because they want some of that magic. Most agencies do the wooing, so they lack the power in the relationship.

like

Valid but “magic” isn’t exclusive to wk. At least in the context of the work. At the end of the day my point being that why is wk granted some leverage if other agencies are bringing you the same product. I’ll be honest, if I were a client then I’d go to wk too lol but it is a thought

#cancelW+K lolololol

funny

Could we make that punchier?

likefunny

It’s called credibility. 🤷‍♂️

like

Good yes

They are the apex predator in adland

like

Oh yea, of course.

like

They have the track record, they get more trust.

And how much does that Wieden Idea from the Portland brain trust actually impact their client’s business? Transform their audience’s experience?

yeah good point you really want to transform the audience experience when selling deodorant 🙄

funny

Sounds like a client problem, not a wk issue

Reviewing resumes and I see more and more frequent that people last one year or less at a job and move on to the next. Is that the new norm? I’m a millennial but my last job I was with for over 4 years. Can I ask in the interview why they’ve moved around so much? Or find a nicer way of asking that. I’m definitely looking for longevity not a hopper.

At this point, I'm wondering if it makes sense to get a personal trainer and to ease the transition back to a somewhat consistent workout schedule. Fully vaxxed btw...
