Will an MBA help get into financial analysis proper or FP&A? I have 6 years experience in mortgage servicing, related accounting and analysis. I seem to be capped off at 65k right now, which is a set back from my previous job, after market conditions.

From my perspective, the MBA degree itself will not help you pivot into finance, but it could afford you the ability to grab a summer internship and hope for a return offer. Similar to how many pivot into iBanking. I hope this helps.

To add to Director 1, as someone who does not have currently have an MBA and has been in FP&A for 5 years [I am considering it], did not come from an Ivy League school, does have CPA [helps, but not necessary], I can say with reasonableness that you have a good shot of breaking into FP&A without an MBA. Tailoring your resume to their job description is important.

TlDR:
Important: review the job descriptions for where you want to work, network on LinkedIn [might take a few in mails to get to the right person (depending on firm it’s usually Mgr, Director, VP or CFO)], but once you you get their attention, reach out to see if they’d be able to refer you [now, this usually works for larger orgs, but if it’s the hiring manager you reached, might sound awkward, but if they want to hire the right candidate, they’ll usually be reciptive to answering any questions. Don’t flat out ask for a referral right away, make the conversation natural.

I know this was probably more than you wanted, but hope this helps.

However, getting and MBA does not hurt. Can get an affordable one online, as it’s just a matter of ‘ticking the box’ with HR and usually only helps for furthering your career

I spent almost 8 years in corporate finance with just a bachelors in economics. That’s a dark path if you don’t have a CPA. Then I got into corporate banking and while you don’t necessarily have to have an MBA to get into that field but it helps. All of your experience in accounting will help get you in banking. As a PM or analyst you’ll be spreading corporate financial statements which will be second nature for you. You’ll thank me in 5-10 years

like

It will have immediate impact for you in about two years but in 5-10 you’ll be amazed compared to what you’ve been pulling in.
