What’s going on at Ruder Finn these days?
I’m not sure what level you are, but over time having a more diversified background in different industries should treat you well. The big think is pulling out the learnings from those different fields and explaining how this has helped you grow/learn.
Earlier on in a career, it’s a bit harder as the company is hiring you for a very specific role and is looking for experience in that field. After a few years in the industry the skills are more transferable whether at an agency or at a company, but you do need experience in the field you want to work in if you are taking on a new job to show you have the chops for it, or you find a boss who wants to give you a shot.
Thank you for your insight! I'm an AAE at the moment and this is my first full-time agency role after being in-house for a local SMB for a year after college. My agency is focused on tech so I remember needing to do a lot of convincing during the hiring process that my fashion/beauty background would transfer well. I'm interested in learning about other industries but don't want to seem like a job-jumper or that I can't commit.
18 YOE here 👋🏻 I’ve worked for clients in travel, CPG, F&B, tech, government and finance doing marcomms, corporate comms, internal comms and issues management over the course of my career. Trust me, later in your career that versatility helps you when you want to go the consultant route.
I appreciate this so much - thank you!
